I'm recently getting into 40k again after a 10 year break and have decided to go with Astra Militarum! So far I have got about 15 guardsmen with a couple of Vox casters and a couple of flamers and a Leman Russ. I plan to start with a 500 point army and need some advice on wether my list is going to be even semi decent on the table. I am a big fan of orders and mass infantry and when I expand the army I want to add a punisher leman russ some chimeras some sentinels and a massive blob of conscripts.
Any advice is much appreciated!
Battalion (CP +3) (Astra Militarum) [499 Pts]
HQ [74 Pts]
Company Commander [34 Pts]
Laspistol, Power Sword [4 Pts]
Tempestor Prime [40 Pts]
Chainsword, Tempestus Command Rod
Dang that's a lot of models for the points!
Astra was a great choice, and be sure to use your command points to their fullest. That's one of the parts of the meta game that seems to be easy to overlook. If you have more than 0 left at the end of round 3, you're doing it wrong or have loaded dice!
I agree with sossen, I'd go with the plasma guns. Much better for the points.
Also, I would get as many more Leman Russes as I could. With the split fire and sponson rules, they're amazing for the points.
Was thinking that when I go to 1000 it will be 2 more Leman Russ and Wyvren with some Heavy weapon teams and upgrade the weapons as well my friend who I will be playing most against has orks which is essentially a massive blob of sluggas, shootas and nobs with a couple of HQs and a truck so the extra shots from volleyguns and hotshot lasguns seem to be a wise choice for now.
The best way to overcome massive blobs of guys, is with your own massive blobs. I'd advocate looking for cheap Guardsmen to field a blob of your own, with a commisar of course.

On the Infantry Squads: Ok, this is a small game, right? 4x4 table? Cut out all the voxes. Either bring two platoon commanders, or just put the IG squads in the same spot. Voxes are more likely to be useful on a larger table. For the price of a CC and two voxes, you could instead bring two platoon commanders, which have more wounds and more attacks. Optimally, just put the two squads where they can support eachother in a blob with the CC, and you can spend the extra 10 points on something else.
Also, its a matter of taste but I think you should get rid of the Infantry Command Squad, and bring a Lord Commissar. The Regimental standard just isn't going to do a whole lot, and neither is one plasma gun (put it on the scions instead!). A commissar can share his leadership, kicks ass in CC, can shoot like the dickens, and you'll never lose more than one guy at a time. He makes a fine warlord too, and he comes in every start collecting kit!
On the Tempestus Scions: Combine the command squad into the main squad. You're not packing any plasma, so there's no reason to put them into two squads. Now you can drop the voxes, and bring another HSVG. Tempestus Scions work good as drop squads with plasma, but I've also had good experience with HSVGs as a primary base of fire. With 24" range on a 4'x4' table, you're not really going to have to move much, and they can lay down at on of shots at BS3+ if you hold still.
On the Leman Russ: The LRBT is a huge point sink at this point level, and its probably not really going to do anything worth writing home about, unless you upgrade it to Pask or at least a Tank Commander. You'd be far better off bringing a Taurox Prime if you have one. They're cheap and extremely effective. A wise opponent will cripple your LRBT, and then ignore it until he can get it into CC, as once its hitting on 5s or 6s its pretty much pointless.
