Several rule dilemmas came up during my latest game that genuinely confuzzled me. some of them we disagreed on, others we had no idea so just guessed after unsuccessfully searching the rulebook (I'm not a fan of the new layout - much harder to find things than in 7th), and a few may have been caused by us making assumptions based on 7th for no reason. Anyway, here goes:

Is dangerous terrain a thing anymore? We went with no as we could find no mention of it, but it felt weird having rhinos plough over craters without having to roll a dice

Can you charge an enemy if you have to pass within 1" of another enemy unit during the charge? I assumed you could just declare both as targets and place all of your models in combat with the desired target, so you would take overwatch from both but could essentially ignoring the obstructing unit.

How does brotherhood of psykers interact with perils? Does it only take one squadmate to die for the perilsplosion to occur?

If playing a mission where the attacker has to escape off the far side of the board, can an attacking unit use its pile in move to leave the board edge while locked in combat? I understand that pile in moves must result in at least one model being closer to the enemy, but if you were 0.9999 inches apart to start with, and the allowed movement put you in range of the board edge, what would happen if one model in the combat attempts to leave the board edge?

Thanks in advance!

Terrain - only if the datasheet says there's a 'dangerous' effect, or you agree something with your opponent.

Charge Q - you have it correct. You need to declare a charge on both to be able to move within 1" of models in either unit. They both get to fire Overwatch.

Brotherhood - the datasheet rules tell you. The Wyrdvane Psykers, for example, take D3 Mortal Wounds on a Perils, and other units only get hit if the squad is wiped.

Pile in - pile ins and consolidation have to end nearer to the nearest enemy model, so seems unlikely to be possible.

For me, the joy is in putting some good-looking models on the board and playing out a fantasy battle - not arguing over the poorly-made rules of some 3rd party who neither has any power over my play nor will be visiting me (and my opponent) to ensure we are "playing by the rules"

Just to be clear, every model that moves in a pile-in has to end closer to an enemy than it started, not just one model.

On the matter of Terrain; if you plan to use any Terrain you will need to create a Datasheet and have your opponent agree on it for every Battle.

Game Workshop gave up on Terrain a long time ago, every edition sees more and more Terrain rules being replaced by 'figure it out yourselves' and 8th is no difference. It isn't even possible to assume that 'default states' for Terrain exist anymore, for they simply do not as strange as that is. Even using a Building as a piece of terrain in 8th will require you determining not just if it will be Impassable Terrain or some sort of neutral psudo-Vehicle, but figuring out exactly what 'Impassable Terrain' means in the first place. In jest, I expect 9th to have no Terrain rules at all and 10th to have a Rule stating your forbidden from using Terrain at this rate....

8th made it so I can no longer sway Tau onto the side of Chaos, but they will eventually turn aside from their idea of the Greater Good to embrace the Greatest of pleasures.
