This is a new thread for hobby in South Korea.
It is open to anyone in South Korea to post hobby progress,
in part to help to form and to reinforce community here,
and in part to encourage us to get things done,
even so far from the mecca of action that is, well, far West of here.

I will begin by posting some snaps of existing work just to get started.

pics aren't working for us. You have links but are using the img tag. Use the URL tag instead to create a hyperlink, or better yet host the img here on dakkadakka as most people will not follow a link to pics.

Good luck

Edit: never mind, images sorted themselves out while I was typing this up. Looks good.

One of the big reasons to do this for me is to create an excuse to pour another drink and get some painting done, rather than head off to bed or da webz for more doom and gloom.

Tonight's first installment involves learning the limits of this cheap airbrush.
I started with about 10ml soapy water (this coming from a 30ml plastic bottle with four drops of dish detergent or thereabouts), about 4 ml INSTAR "obsidian black", maybe 4 ml acrylic tube paint, black, and about 7 ml black tint in acrylic base. The black tint is not useable on its own - too chalky, doesn't adhere, doesn't set up like the INSTAR paint. The great virtue of the INSTAR is that it is a heavily plastic paint like GW paint. In fact, INSTAR is designed in larger bottles to match GW colors at a more economical price, and I see the benefit is being able to work off of GW colors without the hassle of the flip top and at a lower price, while also benefitting as the INSTAR paint is so strong that it lets me use these tints to good effect. Well, anyways, I was happy with the results. I am still figuring out how to use the brush, and how to optimize paint distribution, how to even hold the thing is new to me.... I was able to base these models in about 20 minutes, probably should have been able to do it in ten and someday will I bet once I have gotten the hang of things. I think that I did not use the brush efficiently. Lots of aimless shooting around. SO my first lesson is to aim. Put the airbrush where you want the paint and squeeze the trigger... Done. Do it methodically. Do it once. And get it done.

Anyways, here you are. from beginning to end the first installment. After this, I will try white next time I use the airbrush, will try spraying from the zenith, and adding shading before moving on to colors after that. I will also need to dig up enough arms and weapons to get these guys rolling hot, and put them on bases...So looks like the next installment should be befores and afters on bases then with arms.

Greets to all in the EAST!

OK, so I got out the old bit boxes.
Found a bunch of arms, glued them on, then found a box full of better ones, glued them on,
then quick based the orks I have in front of me to sacrifice to the experimental airbrush gods,
and here they are - my installment for the day.
Hope to have time to finish basecoating these guys tomorrow,
then shade them, then finally get to putting color on them.
Hoping to be able to get most of the color done with the aribrush, too.
Am interested to see how much I will end up having to do with a brush.
Ideally, only some inking, some details like eyes and teeth,
and some details like bright red and yellow highlight parts including bags and chains and so on...
Maybe some metal drybrushing, some rust effects. Will see.
Just noticed, the model cut out of the pic to the left of the viewer is an old old kommando.
I wll get him basecoated and into the next pic next time.
He will be joining an existing unit of old skool kommandos.
The boyz up front will be joining existing units of shooty and sluggy boyz.
One of those is an old weirdboy minder, if I recall correctly.
Will likely just play him as a boy, but maybe could turn him into a low level weirdboy.
Will see.
I know that everyone is excited by da jump.
I might be into using it. Seems pretty cheezy to me, frankly, more deus ex morkina so to speak,
covering up for decent rules and a solid concept.
Ahhh, GW.
How the mightily bright have dimmed...

So I started to paint everything up. Here is my first squad of TACs all painted up and shaded. I have to repaint another coat to clean it up and high light everything. The second squad of TACs I`m going to try painting with no arms on first and paint the chest first. I hate having to try to get into the small cracks with my paint brush. I also put up my venerable dread that has had the metal shaded. A drunk servitor attached the legs backwards after a particularly powerful bout of whiskey.

Wow.
All I can say about this cheap airbrush is - wow.
So easy to get paint onto models.
Inside!
I really made a mess last winter, spray painting in the patio with a fan in the window.
Left an entire room uninhabitable for hours at a time.
Now, no trouble. At all.
Water and soap clean up.
Wow.
Learning how to control the paint - this is the big issue.
I need to be super careful or too much paint comes and makes a big mess.
The air itself sans paint can blow some of the mistakes away, and then I can try laying more down,
but this is the big lesson to learn.
Control.
Control the paint flow, and control where it is going.
I can get a pretty fine line if I am careful, but if not, then paint oversprays and all sorts of things turn green.
Anyways, today, I started by basecoating the models one more time to cover the newly added arms and bases.
Then, I highlighted by spraying around the model, not directly at it, and this worked pretty well to reveal highlights and recesses.
This is good for a couple reasons - one, it lets me see in greater detail what I am painting.
And two, if I put the paint on thin enough (and don't use too much tint in the mix!) then the shading comes through the layer of color, and adds a depth to the painting without need for a wash and further highlights.
The effect with the airbrush is NOT as good as with a drybrush and brush painting,
but it proceeded much faster, even for this being my first time.
Next, I will try to add brown to some big areas,
maybe try to airbrush some details colors, maybe not -
and then move to the brush I figure.
Black in the black stuff like guns and so on,
then paint on details like teeth and eyes,
then brush on some highlights - I might not do much more with the airbrush than that.
Will see how successfully I can control the instrument next time, though.
Anyways, here is the result for the day:

BTW, paint recipe was 1:1:1:2, green acrylic tint, green acrylic tube paint, green INSTAR, soapy water.
Painted very well. Covered very easily. Remained workable for a long while - dried flat and hard.
Good paint mix and easily put together.

No new pictures today.
I mixed some dark brown,
well tried to mix dark brown ended up more black than brown though,
and worked on airbrush control, tried to put paint in some areas while not putting paint onto other areas.
I had a bit of trouble with the paint, as I had no INSTAR in a brown and didn't want to use up my other colors mixing blindly, so used extra tube paint and I ended up with a product that began too watery.
I Mixed it more thoroughly, and added more dull yellow, and ended up with a workable product but by then, well, one downside with this cheap airbrush is that the compressor is both noisy and prone to overheating.
The instructions require that it be used for only 30 minutes in one go, then given time to cool.
I do paint over that time limit, up to 40 minutes or 45 maybe but still, I have to clean it (quickly, I might add, it is really quite easy!) and let it rest before starting up again.
I finished a rewrite on a paper today, and will have to edit down a bit tomorrow, but still should be able to get a bit of time on the airbrush before other obligations tomorrow afternoon.
Will try to post an update then.

Yeah, I want to emphasize that the addition of the INSTAR to the mixes REALLY makes a BIG difference to how the paint behaves on the model.
As for coverage, well, this can be taken in two sense:
1) The paint does cover very well with INSTAR, less well without.
2) I covered TOO MUCH of the models in green, due my poor airbrush skills.

Anyways, now I am in the position where new INSTAR is more necessity than luxury.
Any news on when paint may be available for shipping?

I haven't even gotten to the point of setting up the online store yet or even invoices so officially shipping and availability won;t be till the latter part of the year, early 2018 at best. Things could happen earlier, but I don't want to count all my chickens yet

However if you are in desperate need to get the models done, I can send you out another bottle once they arrive as I still have some of the Grass Green colour left.

I'll PM you tomorrow (Just finished a 14 hour shift so not really too with it at the moment )

I am not sure about that.
I am hosting the pics on my google drive, and edit the stable link that it generates per directions that I found on a board concerning that topic somewhere.
Maybe others can chime in -
Others - do you see the pictures immediately, or is there some trouble with this posting method?

The green is a combination of INSTAR, green acrylic tint, green acrylic tube paint, and soapy water.
It is mixed in roughly a 1:1:1:2 ratio, goes on very easily and covers immediately.
With the INSTAR added, it dries hard and stays stuck, covers evenly, and doesn't move around like water.
Without the INSTAR, I have tried other formulas and they don't hold together well, have the consistency of ink more or less.
I could use less water, but still the acrylic tube paint alone doesn't seem to be able to hold onto the tints well enough to be able to thin the paints enough to spray from the airbrush most effectively.
Basically, the INSTAR works as a polymer base, the acrylic tube paints seem to add some flexibility to the INSTAR which - when used solo - seem to dry very hard, and the tints add some depth of color and opacity, but of course do not hold together at all - if used solo, they dry dusty and come off easily, especially with a new wet layer they just lift off and mix with the newly applied paint/solvent which is nice, because you can get some good effects and blending is easy but I learned the hard way that they cannot be used without a strong base paint to hold them together, and of course the soapy water helps the airbrush to move the paint to the models in thin coats easily and quickly without sputtering and getting all cloggy.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I figured that these ork models are too detailed for me old gin soaked fingers to paint well with the airbrush, at least until I get a lot better with the airbrush.
Besides that, I need to re-up some supplies to get a good paint consistency from the airbrush.
So, I figured that I should go back to what I know best, brushes.
With a brush, I usually undercoat dark and then white drybrush to bring out the highlights, then paint thin layers of color to allow that shading to come through.
Now that I have the base colors down, I just added a quick drybrush, white, and will come back with brush on colors tomorrow.
Here is the interim.

You too, huh?

Umm, yeah - seems there are, but I am not in a hurry to forge certain relationships.
Funny, but here, I tend to avoid foreigners.
Most are here for the "wrong" reasons, I guess.
I mean, most that I meet are here for a year, or two, and spend their time drunk, hunting girls, that sort of thing.
So, I tend to stay away.
Or, they are just not my style person.
I mean, I left the USA for a (few) reason(s).
One of these is that I refuse to pay taxes to murder (mostly brown) babies.
Occupy foreign lands (like this one).
That sort of thing doesn't sit well with me, and though I have yet to meet a US soldier that I personally don't get along with in the short term, at some point politics may become an issue and then, well... I just avoid it.
That said, most soldiers that I have met have been as radical (or more so!) than I, e.g. wanting to close foreign bases, go home, repair bridges and rebuild schools, that sort of thing.
Most seem to support Trump's stated aim, to 'make America great again' and that sort of thing.
But still, I just do my own thing.
Anyways, I guess I am busy with work, too, and that keeps me from traveling to the nearest (maybe an hour away by car?) military base looking for possible trouble.

Apocritas (the other currently contributing member to this log) lives in Seoul, and has been working a lot, but he and I seem to be more on the same page so far as lifestyle and so on, and we intend to get some game time in after his overtime this month (and after I finish this paper with the Oct. 1st deadline) but till then, it is ORKS and more Orkses!
Case in point, the following.
This is after the basecoat with the airbrush, and a drybrush, and some color, and some black, and another drybrush, and now the final coat of brown. Next step is final coat of green, some highlight colors (red, yellow, grey, white, a thin black wash on black parts and to deepen recesses, then some ink line shading of recesses) to pick out details, and then I will worry about bases.
So, maybe half done?

Orks are moving into the final stages.
I could go on, and on, but I think that I am gonna black ink line some highlights, pick out some odd colors like the stormboy leader's pink tongue, edge some metallics and rust some bolts, base 'em simple and call 'em done.
Maybe two more short sessions, then I think that I will be moving into finishing some old marine models.

Thanks man!

Yes, I agree - remember when 40k was a thinly veiled jab at the then-current social-political status-quo?
When the cops were just as thuggish and brutish as the thugs and brutes, even more so?
And, some orks took up Imperial tactics, with their looted wagons, and in the case of the Stormboyz the blitzkrieg of the old German air raids?

There was a sense of history then, before the Matrix descended and time stopped in 1999 - as things are, now.
Sad, but we live in a much more dangerous time for this loss of conceptual depth.
Makes me want to crawl back into my hole and paint.

By the way, I will get some close ups of the models when they are ready.
I see now that this snapshot has lost a lot of the detail,
for example the stormboy badges have lost their edges.
Those need to stand out.

Maybe finish some languishing marine models first.

and a lone extra kommando that didn't get painted with the last batch a couple years ago cuz he needed strippin!
Oy!

Not much to do, but I might not have even noticed without this feature.

After I do that, I need to matte finish them to seal the deal.
Then, imperials.

I never worry about full resolution pics. If anyone is judging my models that close up then they don't understand my paint jobs are not for completion but just tabletop standard. I might ask for extra looks when it's a centerpiece, but not for line troops.
