Given that the (true life) events depicted in the Star Wars series happened "long, long ago", the thought that a lost smuggler or even a questing Jedi visited our Bronze Age societies and told them of a moon sized space station isn't too unlikely. It's not like they had to follow any kind of Prime Directive.
