I have the opportunity to purchase some second hand models from a friend. This includes: 35 orc boyz, 40 gobs, 10 spider riders, and 5 boar boys. Also a 10 man unit of skitarii and a Dunecrawler. I play ad mech so the last two I definatly could use. I have never played AoS but am potentially interested especially if for a bargin. My question is what would be a fair price for all this?
He said that it is all(with a few exeptions in the greenskin pile) still on the sprue . I looked up on the website and the ten man skitarii unit by itself is $47 and the dune crawler is $79. And for the greenskins I calculated that from the website buy them wouls cost $121.65 for the boyz, $84 for the gobs, $42 for the spider riders, and $34.75 making it $282.40 for all the greenskins. So what would be fair?

Offer $230 for the lot. If he really doesn't want them, he'll be happy with that price.

It depends how well or badly they are assembled/painted but I'd probably only buy that for £50-60 so something like $100 Canadian max.

Mostly on sprue for like 20% of price? Who sells you stuff for that price?

The thing I do is look at a GW battleforce type box with a saving. All of the above have been available like that. Then buy in bulk from a discount retailer. Sell off the battleforce elements that you don't need. This will give you the true price for bnos, although actually I'd be getting bnib.
In this instance the Orc models are pretty old and super easy to find on ebay so some of my costing comes from there.
I'll smash a big chunk off the cost of anything pre assembled or painted.
Also someone selling to me in person at a club won't get the ebay hassle, fees, postage/packaging cost so that money comes out of my offer.
Plus I'm taking everything right there and then.
Chances are this guy needs to sell and just before Xmas he probably needs it fast.
Also the second hand market drops out of most things but especially wargaming on the lead up to Xmas.

You don't even want the Orcs really and there are way too many to start to learn AOS with. Remember, you're doing him the favour.

Well good luck getting mostly still in sprues models worth of over 300$ for 20% of price...Nobody would bother to sell it for that. Why would they? They can easily get better price than that!

Sure try if you want but you are wasting your time even asking to get them for that pathetically low price.

I think that 50% of RRP is reasonable for 'mates rates'. No harm in making an offer and negotiating up or down as necessary.

That I find is for assembled/painting models. At least locally here. On sprues I find myself having to pay for ~80-90% of shop prices(keeping in mind shop price being often calculated from discounted store). Mix and it's somewhere between.

Of course you can try offering that but unless he's in a hurry to get them off he'll probably wait for better offer.

That or used markets in Finland are notably pricier

Generally, for buying miniatures I find that second-hand models that are still new (meaning unopened) are worth at least three quarters of their original price. That is a 25% discount, which is more than you will get from most stores.
Models which have been taken from their box, but are still on their sprues are worth slightly less.
Models that were already clipped from their sprue are worth about half of the full price.
Models that were already assembled are worth about a quarter of the full price.
Models that already have paint on them are worth next to nothing. Maybe slightly more if it is just a black, grey or white ground layer or if they are painted very well.
And don't forget to haggle!

Of course, when buying or selling to friends it all changes completely. Usually we just trade in kind.

As to the OP, I agree with Dr. Mills that $230 sounds like a fair offer. But start by offering less, then move up to 230 as a final offer.

If they are painted I well, I am happy to pay just above retail.
if they are painted badly I will accept up to 50% retail
if they are built well 75%
if they are built badly 50% at most

It really varies

Iron your summary forgets material and availability.

Metal tend to hold onto more value even when painted because stripping tends to be easy and work well; meanwhile metal copies of models no longer sold or only sold in finecast also tend to retain value and some even go up if they are popular (like the old demonettes)

Ah wish I could get stuff for next to nothing I don't even care if it's painted since it's easy to strip it. Last week I spent like 15 minutes stripping warhound titan and that was particularly tough bugger to deal with. Regular models are easy enough to strip I would spend more time ASSEMBLING so if they are assembled well I just save time by stripping paint rather than assemble.

(and same goes for plastic)

In europe there are several online shops that sell GW new boxes with a 25% price off.

That's why I wouldn't even consider a lot (unboxed or on sprue at least) that doesn't have at least a 30% reduction of the official GW price.

Start with the retailer discount average in your country. In the US it's 85%. Obviously don't pay more than that.

Generally around here people pay 60-65% of MSRP between friends it seems. Keep in mind that poorly assembled figures sell for less, and poorly painted figures even less than that.

Personally it's exceptionally rare for me to find models based, built or painted to a fashion I would like - so I almost never buy pre-built stuff.

Yeah, as a seller, I'd strongly consider this, depending on what I was trying to re-purpose the cash for.

I always pay 50% of price. If you look around on Kijiji you'll find really good deals. Plus you can haggle since you don't know the people. Got a massive Necron army for super low (about 40% retail).

The Start Collecting box for the Skitarii is very good value - it contains the dunecrawler and 10-man squad plus a tech-priest, all for not much more than the dunecrawler alone. With FLGS or online discounts, it can be found for less than the price of the dunecrawler.

If the guy wants to sell it ASAP one can get a much greater discount. I bought 1 month ago a box of Rubric Marines NIB (literally with even the plastic covering the box) for 18 pounds, so with a 40% discount. And a bunch of other NIB Chaos stuff for the same, 40-50% discount. If you buy in bulk and in hand, yeah, you can squeeze much higher discounts that a 10-20% even compared with 3rd party retailer prices.

There have been plenty of hysterical responses from both sides so far. So we descend into pointless bickering with neither side listening to each other. So posting here becomes more masturbation than conversation.

The stuff you put on camp stoves(basically alcohol i think) is bloody good paint removal. Having found how well both resin and plastic lost paint from now on paint job is no concern so if no problem with assembly easy deal.
