Hi everyone

The Pheremone Trail startagem allows a tyranid infantry unit that is in reserve to be set up beside a Lictor that is on the board.
I was thinking that this could allow me to deploy a Tyranid Prime beside some tunneled up Tyranid Warriors in a Trygon Tunnel.

a few questions about this:

It mentions that you can only do this if the Prime is already in reserve (does not give the ability to start in reserve) so my first question is can any unit start in reserve?
Any restriction to this (only on specific mission, must roll 3+ to come out, etc) ?

Secondly you can only use this on a Lictor that is already on the battlefield, setting up units isnt simultanious is it? Can I deepstrike my lictor first and on the same turn deepstrike a Tyranid prime besides the Lictor using this Stratagem.

thanks Dakka

The restriction is that it has to set up as reinforcements, how it does so is irrelevant, whether it's a unit rule or mission rule.

As for the 2nd point, I would say yes, you can. Sequencing rules allow you to choose the order in which things happen, at which point the trigger for the stratagem happens.

Cardiff

1 - the unit needs a valid way to be held back as reinforcements. A Tyranid Prime can't in Matched Play. Genestealers can using their Infestation Markers, then use the Pheremone Trail to deploy instead.

2 - Place Lictor. Then play Stratagem. As you did the placement of the Lictor first it is 'already on the battlefield'. Simples!

Awwwh, thats too bad.

I figured it was too good to be true. we're still stuck with only the overly expensive Tyranocyte to deepstrike the Prime or maybe the Jormungandr Stratagem which is a bad Hive fleet for a deepstriking/charging tactic...

Oh well, thanks guys

Btw you can get a prime in reserve using the Jormurgundyr stratagem to put him in the tunnels below.

Yeah but then why are you spending the extra CP to bring him to a lictor instead of just coming with the Jorm unit your already spending the CP on? The only use I can see is in conjunction with Endless Swarm to deploy the revived unit into a better location instead of the edges of the board. But then how are you fitting 30 hormagaunts or termagants around a lictor? I guess hydra could use it to shove some pyrovores back into someones face.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

Pheremone trail has loads of uses examples:

1) Genestealers in infestation nodes (as noted above)

2) With Endless Swarm or Call the Brood (also noted above)

3) To pull something from a tunnel to a different location than the rest of team tunnel in Jormungandr. This works well with a unit of Stealers and a Broodlord, the stealers go in the infestation marker, the Broodlord in the tunnel. You drop everything else out with your raveners and drag the Broodlord over to the stealers.

4) With Genestealer Cults as a redundancy to when they roll bad, which happens often with large numbers of Cult units.

And a whole bunch more, I've got a few other ideas, but those are the most concrete.

Gsc o agre with. Spending 2 cp with jorm to deepstrike the unit where you could have deep striked it for 1 anyway is an incredible waste of a valuable resource.

I don't think you are following what I'm talking about. Say I am deepstriking a broodlord, 30 dakkagaunts, some Neurothropes and some Pyrovores with Jorm stratagem and 1 unit of Raveners, I have my 20 Stealers in Infestation. Now I want all the dakkagaunts raveners etc. to come down together in one part of the board, but I don't want the stealers there, they will just end up outside of charge range and not able to perform well at all, they need to be somewhere else on the table. I drop the Lictor and spend a CP to bring the Stealers in next to it and now I spend another to bring the Broodlord across. I would have to buy another unit of Raveners to bring the Broodlord in in addition to the lictor and that means another unit in reserve so I need another one on the board, way more expensive than just spending the 1 CP. Especially if I have built the list with this in mind and so have that CP bracketed for this purpose.

I understand what your saying. I dont agree with its value.

Fair enough. As long as you can see that it's a different situation to the one where you can deep strike it without the lictor then not liking the tactic is fine of course! Apologies for the misunderstanding on my part.
