So yea, the template is gone in 8th, they have a short range, seems like not a very good weapon even with the autohits, which incidentally they had before. I have to say I'm not all that big on weapons who's number of attacks is totally random either but that is what it is. When would you want to take flamers? When wouldn't you be better off with any number of other options if you have them? I think even Jump Pack assault marines are better off with a bolt pistol and chainsword than a flamer, which was one of the few reasons I'd use that setup in previous editions, but now that pistols can be used in CC I don't think the math works out better for flamers in 8th. I'm imagining that I'm missing something and hope you fine folks can tell me what it is.

Yeah basically they are bad and over-costed across the board. My theory is that GW thinks overwatch from flamers is a lot more effective than it really is. Because right now a flamer at 8” does barely more damage than a storm bolter at 12”.

The decisive issue is range. 8” range is no use for overwatch when so many charges are from 9” away. If you always got to fire your guns in overatch regardless of range then flamers would be a lot better.

Not to nitpick, but a 9" charge only has a 27.78% chance of succeeding, 47.84% if you have a reroll. It's not as big a problem as people think. That being said overwatch should not take range into account, makes no sense that someone moving towards you can't be hit.
