Sitting in a Graveyard

Hi all!

I've been saying I'd do this for a while, but between... laziness, a lack of productivity and not having a decent camera setup I have never actually got round to getting this sorted... so without further ado...

So I have always been into warhammer, my uncle was the first person to really introduce me to it when I was 8, playing spacehulk on the floor in my grandmother's basement. I vaguely remember playing the marines... and losing... a lot. But even so i swiftly grew to love the hobby. Especially painting and building.

My first real army was Orks, 40k, speed freakz, though I never had enough bikes.

So it only felt right that to get back into the hobby by starting with another Ork, and I've always been into converting so...

Here I present my one-off, warmup project, an Ork warboss, the base of which is a Skaven Stormfiend.

WAAAAAAGHHH

It's not the best paintjob I'm capable of, but I wanted to have fun with it, and I really did... It was something interesting to get me back into the hobby.

His parts come largely from two sources: the Stormvermin kit itself, and the box of ork nobz that I purchased alongside it.

The main body of the big shoota gatling gun was a scratch build from plasticard, my first time using the material actually. With one of the ratling guns stuck on the end, and a banner bit to make it orky.

I'll update shortly with pictures of my... "to do list"

Thanks for taking a look.

And now to the main meat of the post, my current project.

I've always been a fan of the sons of Sanguinius, and of course I immediately jumped in at the deep end when I started up the hobby again... and purchased an entire army of the boys in red.. all at once.

My original plan was to paint them as greek themed successor chapter, but I then decided that for my own sanity and honestly just because I was more into the idea of blood angels than their successors, even a chapter of my own making.

So this leaves us with my current situation. I have ONE painted squad. My first tactical squad actually. But I have a plan. A hopeful and possibly a bit overestimated plan but a plan nonetheless. I am going to paint at least one unit of this army every week until the end of February. If I succeed, I am allowed to start on my grand alliance death army (Skeletons and vampires!) if not.. I have to paint every single model in this army before I am allowed to continue. Now for the undertaking as per usual, a lot of conversions in here, I'll put a brief summary of the units underneath each image:

HQ: The converted Celestant Prime was to be the Chapter Master of the army, now just a captain, then we have two other jumppack captains, the HQ from Dark imperium, a terminator captain, my custom Tycho(will get better images later.) Jump pack sanguinary priest, and a lieutenant.

Troops: Tactical squad with meltas, combat squad with flamers, two intercessor combat squads and a drop pod, actually one of two, the second isn't built and I don't WANT to build it.

Heavy Support: My baby, the leviathan, magnetised for weapon options and at the hips, work in progress predator, literally just sprayed and the metal half-basecoated. And a unit of hellblasters.

Elites: 5 man sternguard, 10 man converted sternguard that were originally meant to be spur-of-the-moment iron hands, company ancient, primaris ancient, company champion, 6 converted vanguard vets.

Fast Attack: Woefully empty for a blood angels army I know, but I decided I needed to stop. Just the three interceptors, Still need to drill gun barrels.

My plan of attack is, at the moment:

This week: Finish predator, spray all my marines at the weekend when I have chance,

Week commencing 05/02/18: Tactical squad

Week commencing 12/02/18: Combat Squad and Hellblasters

Week Commencing 19/02/18: Intercessors

Week Commencing 26/02/18: Captain(not decided which yet) Lieutenant and Ancient

If i get batch painting down, I may be able to make more progress on the standard infantry than I'm expecting, but we'll see.

That's all for tonight, however. I built the last of my dark imperium stuff tonight, so I can say i have made SOME progress at least.

So I am making progress, I've got the base of the predator done.... I will admit i'm taking as many shortcuts as possible with this, I hate tanks, so much.

Some of you may have noticed I changed my painting goals to remove any vehicles.... they will be done at a later date, when I don't need to fit them into a deadline.

Almost done, just got to finish the various gems and lenses and do some text on the scrolls.

I am actually looking forward to saturday, It'd be nice to have a red blood angels army at the very least, so spraying all the infantry is going to be a highlight of the weekend.

Going well so far, I managed to finish the tactical squad up to tabletop standard, just need to base them. I've not had chance to take photos however, and tonight is Dark Heresy night so I may not be able to.

Week 2:

Not sure what went wrong with the lighting setup, maybe the exposure is too high on the camera.

However the challenge is going well so far! First tactical squad finished to tabletop standard and based. I think I may go back to them at a later date and do a second coat of the red, they're a little dimmer than the predator and the other tactical squad as they're just the base red from the spray with a wash over them, but will suffice for gaming purposes.

This week I'll be doing the Hellblasters(which I have been looking forward to) and the combat squad.

Turns out sometimes I can paint quickly too!

Hellblasters done! These guys will be based with the combat squad, who I have no doubt will take the rest of the week to paint

So, I have made a good chunk of progress, almost completed my little task.

Today was my local GW's monthly "exhibition day" so I used the excuse to go and have some pictures taken on a proper gaming board:

Most of the army is complete, just need to finish off the ancient's banner and base him, and then do the captain, I have a week and a day to finish them off, so I'm quietly optimistic.

I've already got my death army's starting bits planned ouT, current purchase plan is:

Get Started! Skeleton Horde
Skeleton warriors (1 box)
Dragon Blades (2 Boxes to be converted using puppetswar vampire heads and the death upgrade kit into blood knights.)

I've even worked out a little "rewards" system to prevent me from buying entire armies at once.

That's all for now!

Well Folks, this is it. I am officially ONE drybrush away from completing my task, and a week ahead of schedule too. In the past four weeks I have painted a tactical squad, a combat squad, five hellblasters, ten intercessors, a predator, a lieutenant, an ancient and finally a captain. I just need to drybrush his base with tyrant skull and he's done!

I think I am going to leave the ancient's banner blank for the moment, as I am not quite sure what to paint, or if my current freehand ability is up to the standard that I want on the banner.

Now for the Captain(featuring my fingers)

Very happy with how he came out, I am especially proud of the cloak, as that was my first real attempt at shading cloth.

In the following days while I await payday I will attempt to get pictures of the entire army as they are now, to a somewhat higher standard, I can't work out how to get the red to be less.. overexposed on my camera, it's washing out most of the shading on the images.

Either way, thanks for popping in! Up next: Snuffles gets Spooky

It's definitely planned, I at the very least want to paint both captains, unfortunately the vanguard vets aren't overly useful army wise,so they may be held off for a while
