I'm trying to start a black templars army and am wondering what models to use as my crusader squads. I'm a new player and trying to build my army unit by unit rather than buying it all at once. Do or can i use the primaris space marines for my crusader squad or do i use the tactical space marines?

Crusader squads use the models for regular marines and scouts. There is (or was?) a dedicated box for BT with specific bitz.

I have an army of black templars, to make your crusaders look for the black temlars upgrade kit, it has enough bits to make 1 squad of marines, 1 squad of termies & 1 rhino, dreadnaught & land raider look templary as well as enough special and melee weapons, combine these with enough scout kits and a tactical kit and you will have the base fir your crusader squads and spare bits for characters and flavor to boot. Add vehicles and mx in a command swuad bix and you can create a whole bunche of vetereans and support chars to boot.

There's nothing stopping you from just painting the standard Tac Marines black and using the BT transfers, although there are some nice upgrade kits you can get to really make them stand out.

Right you would just use tactical marines for the crusader squads. There are no rules for Primaris Crusader Squads. Primaris marines are a different unit than Tactical Marines and tactical marines are identical to the crusader Initiates. You will also use close combat Scouts as the Neophytes

The Black Templar Upgrade kit is amazing! I can't stress enough how good it really is.

I wish you the Strength of Dorn on your crusade, brother!

Tactical Marines and Scouts.

This is the optional upgrade kit for the former: https://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Black-Templars-Chapter-Upgrade
