Probably should have asked this before I went on a shopping spree and bought three boxes of the golden bikers Curious on peoples opinions - my current IG list contains an outrider detachment of 1 shield captain and 3x3 bike units all armed with hurricane bolters and interceptor lances. Just finished building them and working on getting them all painted by Thursday night (still short by one - trying to find someone to split a box with).

They're really strong units, for sure, since they're basically good at everything for a reasonable price. You won't be upset with the fruits of your spree.

they make a great ingredient in imperial soup. not sure you need 9 though. don't get me wrong, they are strong and super cool but other armies have tools to deal with them. that said as outriders to guards armament they are awesome.

Only one Custodes army made the top eight at Adepticon this past weekend.

DakkaDakka is really the place where you need anti-tank guns to kill basic dudes, because anything less isn't durable enough.

Yeah that doesn't surprise me. They are definitely an elitest and expensive points wise army. So trying to field an army that can has decent board control would be difficult. I was just going to plug these guys into my "normal" IG list. Granted they take a huge bite out of it. I'm kinda stuck with the outrider if I want to keep my battalion regiment clean for Cadia (other detachment is Catachan).

That sounds... fine, if not actually very impressive, doesn't it?

Actually checking the results it looks more like an IG army with 4 biker captains - which isn't really a Custodes army. It does suggest that bikers and IG work well together though.

Otherwise tons of nids and dark talons seem to be the main thing.

The jetbikes are really good but they have weaknesses. I wouldn’t build an army around them.

They just die like guardsmen when your opponent can throw over 20 Mortal Wounds per turn.

I really feel like the best way to run them is in a Supreme Command Detachment with three Shield Captains. One of my regular opponents uses them and they are just nasty.

True of all Custodes really, thats why people bring Guardsmen to do the dying first

Three shield captains on dawneagles are really good and two of them can rock 3++. I would be hesitant to use them until after the faqs drop.

ATM you would definitely win games if you took 8 biker captains (2 SC detachments) and an IG brigade. Surprised I have seen that combo yet in a tourney.

I recently took 6 of them + Celestine (1k Points) in a 2v2 game. My team mate had basically Leman Russes and Guardsmen,

Our opponents were new Tau and new Necrons.

The Captains pretty much bounced off things like Wraiths and Riptides with 3++ saves. After the riptide got charged by 5 of them it took only 4-5 wounds . But they were pretty effective vs anything else.

I had 2 bike left by the end. We won because the fight all took place in their half and they had no nope of reaching the IG tanks in the back. I'm not kidding myself though, the IG did pretty much all the heavy lifting.

Edit: it was a 3000 point game, so 2k of IG and 1k of my Characters

Geoff Robinson got top 8 with a mostly Custodes army (3 biker captains, 3x3 custodes, 5 bikes + assassins and some guard mortars)

Also I think it would be relevant to consider how many Custodes even showed up. If 3 show up and 1 makes the top 8 thats good. if 100 show up (as example) and 1 makes it thats a lot worse.

I took that with both Relics, and blood games on the two with the relics alongside Celestine and an IG brigade, went 3-1 at Adepticon, lost the one game by 1 point. Wasn't in the top 16 though.
