I am guessing tonight, maybe tomorrow night at the latest. I am sure it will involve a few others contributing some minor assets. I am sure the only thing holding things up are getting the assets in place.

Do we really need a third thread in which to discuss Syria? Its already being done in the ISIS thread and on and off in the US politics one.

You do realize ISIS is just the name of the thread? Its extensively discussed Syria and has adressed the latest gas attack. No need to be hostile about it.

And yes, there will probably be a very showy but ultimately utterly useless bombardment. You would need a full on nation building project to reverse the course of Syria.

Its just the seeming tone of it is all. its kinda a light take in the title for osmeone if or not getting the gak bombed out of them. Because if anything happens, its not going to be small scale.
"Potential US airstrikes on Syria this week" is a less catchey but alsmo more formal title.

So you want me to sound more sensitive about bombs landing on people? In Off-Topic? On Dakka? Like it would make any difference.

I am honestly curious of when some might think this will occur, as I am convinced it will, and are sure some others do to. So I am not even asking if it will happen.

And knowing what I have learned here, it will eventually turn into Trump bashing and blaming the US for the problems in the middle east. But at least for a few pages my curiosity will hopefully be satisfied. But in the meantime we can debate the wording of my title.

Its a topic about people dying and suffering. Even though off topic has its lesser moments we could at least start a subject like this with a little decorum instead of apparent glee.

There is hardly need for this to turn into Trump bashing. Let me be clear that Syria is in a hole no one could easily get them out of. But the difference between Trump and another president is Trump's preference for making a show out of things. What Syria needs is solutions, not a feel good media circus. Throwing a few bombs or shutting down Assad's air force isn't going to solve the bigger issue.

What is your expectation of the extent of US action then?

Look, I would love to see none of this happening, but it is. All the crap going on in this world and you are upset with the title of the thread, as if my change in attitude will being about peace and a better world. If I sound nonchalant its because this has gone for...wow I was going to say years, but its actually thousands of years. Thousands of years of men hacking other men to death. We're even on a gaming site that essentially covers games about men hacking other men (and sometimes aliens) to death.

Yes its all terrible, and nothing is changing. Its a crappy planet.

So I assume the next time there's a school shooting, you'll be popping in with a similarly nonchalant thread title, then?

The way we discuss things does matter, and actual people having their lives ended isn't equivalent to plastic men fighting with chainsaws. Just shrugging your shoulders and going 'well, that's how it is' isn't some kind of magic truth bomb.

The irony is that if we weren't so resigned and comfortable with the fate of people dying the world would have never let Syria get this far.

The truth is that there isn't anything we can do, these events will just happen. If I got on here and said for the hundredth time "wow this is so terrible as has to stop", it would make your day better/ Your opinion of me better? I've just accepted this is the world we live in. I don't gas bomb people, I don't bomb those people responsible, nor do I shoot up schools. But I am cynical about the world and things ever changing. I can be that.

But lets give something else a shot. Lets see if we can even get along on Dakka. Lets make Dakka a better place! We can't even do that, let alone hoping everyone else can. That's your truth bomb right there.

But I want you to have a good day today, so I am going to come out and say "I hope things in Syria will immediately stop, that there will be no escalation, and the world can be a better place."

Agreed. But we actually are. Much better than most want to admit, because they do nothing about it.

The question really should be "IF" the U.S. will bomb Syria. Correct me if I'm wrong, but think Trump said U.S. is weighing options.

Didn't Haley say in the UN that the US was going to respond regardless of Security Council approvement. Kinda hard backing away from that statement by doing nothing.

Also I think we long passed the station of proxy war the moment Russia got involved.
