I really like the Imperial Bastion with the Icarus Lascannon in my 2000 pt list, but its a bit on the pricey side at 217 pts. What are your thoughts/experiences in general, or specifically, on this or any other fortification units for an Astra Militarum army at 2000 pts when trying to be competitive?

I've faced them before. if you are on a sparse terrain board, the effect is huge. A full squad on the tower makes them invulnerable to melee from non-flyers and it isn't pratical to try and destroy the tower. If the board is ITC level of terrain however you'll have trouble placing it anywhere useful.

With the newly released FAQ it seems to me that a bastion would make it even more difficult for 1st turn assault armies (nids, BA, etc) and 1st turn shooty deep strikers (MT, DA, etc) to have much success. I can see where it almost makes a mockery of any enemy army depending upon some 1st turn alpha strike to get an early win. To me its an insurance policy against such armies. I'm leaning strongly to bringing a bastion with my gun line oriented AM force. I am still debating what unit and characters to embark in it.........

I made use of an Aegis line yesterday, and the gun that comes with it isn't that bad considering the amount of Fly models in the game.

Getting a cover save for a good deal of your list is quite fun for gunlines, and actually gives vehicles one for a change.
