Hi all!
I am new to this forum and I have just gotten into Warhammer 40k hobby, however I have been a fan of the lore and other Warhammer 40k mediums for some time now (few years). I decided to start with the 8th edition.

Now, I am into role playing create your own character type of thing(also bare in mind that this is not just personal preference but practical as well, since where I am from there is a small amount of people who enjoy this hobby). Hence, the title. The army that I am slowly but surely building is Blood Angels. BA are quite strict followers of the codex astartes, so they have 10 companies, but the main character that I am building is a primaris Captain, but since positions are allocated in each company (canonically) its hard for me to reconcile my role playing story and the Captain with the cannon. Therefore I was wondering if there is any leeway or theoretical possibility to add a company? I am not really looking to create my own chapter, for reasons...)). This can be a special operations company or something like that (BA kill team but on a company scale).

Things to consider and my attempt at reconciliation (if I get things wrong correct me):
- after the devastation of Baal (haven’t read the book yet, spoil of necessary) BAs suffered a lot of casualties, and techanically some companies may have been utterly destroyed adding my Captain still is not an option as he will be eventually be replaced by cannon.
- despite this robute has no idea of the scale of losses of the Blood Angels, could he overestimated technically with the BA primaris reinforcements? So formation of a special unit)) or a company is not that far fetched... if you see what I mean.
Do enlighten me if I am not understanding something correctly. Hope someone can help me find a loophole ))
P.S. noob question off topic: it is not quite clear to me if one player can control space marines and Astra Militarum within point limit of course? The reason that I am asking because they both have Imperial as their keywords... thanks in advance!

I don't know if it would work with your background but what I did was have a Great Company from the past that was recorded as lost in the Warp time travel to the present.

I know that Guilliman created an 11th Company of his own Ultramarines, but he wouldn't have that same authority over the Blood Angels.

Odds are, some of the old Captains are dead, promoted or migh have got the "Primaris" treatment themselves. There's easily room for a Captain of an existing Company be Primaris - either a new guy who's replacing a deceased one, or an existing one, turned Primaris.

Odds are, he won't be replaced in canon. I don't think GW will name them - but even if they do - you can say "this is just a Captain who was serving in a different time period".

Having a "spec-ops" company is a bit strange, however. Most companies are standardised, especially so in the Blood Angels, either being fully dedicated to line companies, or specifically made up of reserve units. Special units, aside from things like the Death Company (which are required by necessity) are not often created in codex chapters (which the Blood Angels strive to be).

I personally would just pick a company you like, and say that the original Captain got killed/given the Primaris treatment.

I might be able to help a bit.

All the BA successor chapters are pretty much destroyed.

I'm not sure what you mean about the captain and cannon.
Do you mean "canon"? Are you concerned that your choice of HQ will be obsolete? If so, don't worry, not every marine is a primaris yet.

Bobby G does not "over estimate". Such an idea is heresy.

Guard and Marines can fight side by side because they have the Imperial Keyword. However, the recent CA adds some change about Detachments. Imperial Keyword isn't enough. So the guard and Marines needs to be in separate Detachments but may still work together.

Thanks guys for the suggestions!

pm713 this would not really work for me, but thanks for the input anyway!

Smudge, the problem is that according to the codex all company captains have have names, as I recall, so I presume there is not much space for creative freedom, even though there might be nothing written on them, but I get what you mean. Concerning Spec ops: so although unorthodox is it still technically possible if Dante would take an executive decision and create one? I am kinda leaning towards that solution...

Def dread yea I meant canon, as in my newly created Captain does not contradict canon in general and can exist within the universe.
I think it is a possibility that he overestimated, and in his eyes this kind of talk would not be heretical I believe (although unappreciated). 1) there is no way of him knowing how many casualties BA suffered nor is he clairvoyant. I would admit it is more likely that he might have underestimated though. 2) it would not be heretical because he does not see himself as a deity or a Demi-god, nor does he see the emperor as one. The rules, norms, regulations that were established by the Ecclesiarchy and the institute itself are not to his liking. I personally think he despises them and as far as I gathered, he is open to some constructive criticisms if they are appropriate.

Anyway, I think it might be worthwhile to provide the context of the story that I am crafting, so someone might throw new ideas, or again, correct me and advise me. It’s a work in progress and I am doing research still. So any review and input would be highly appreciated.

Synopsis:
After the devastation of Baal and subsequent intervention by Bobby G restoration of the BA chapter was underway. A primaris Captain and his squad of the BA (newly arrived with Indomitable fleet) is tasked by Dante to investigate possible survival of a BA strike force that was left stranded in the nearby system. All is known that they were fighting off the Tyranid invasion and that there has been a stress signal received from the same coordinates but proper communication is down. The mission of the task force is to investigate, and upon locating surviving Blood Angels, they are to evacuate together immediately, because soon after their departure Inquisition will despatch a fleet of ships to perform an exterminatus, since there is a high probability of remnant Tyranid presence.
Upon arrival our team does find the remnants of the task force and a small detachment of Imperial Guardsmen engaged in a battle with the Tyrranids, which are now separated from their hive fleet (obviously because it was destroyed). Before the task force can declare mission accomplished, lieutenant of the remnant BA force refuses to evacuate until the civillians that are currently under their protection are evacuated as well, along with the guardsmen. Facing little option our Captain agrees and while the preparations for the evacuation are underway and the evacuation itself, Captain decides to rescue scattered forces of the IG and BA that are trapped behind enemy lines. While doing so they stumble upon something more sinister- chaos presence. Specifically servants of Nurgle. Despite limited time and resources they are successful and along with human lives certain artificats and war gear is also recovered. Recognizing the effort towards rebuilding of the chapter, Dante decides to create a temporary spec ops company under the Command of our Captain to undertake similar missions to this one.

This is just like part one of the story though obviously chaos thing will come back and there will be betrayal, courage and what not. Role playing story driven game basically...
This is it in a nutshell. Sorry for the long read but I tried to shorten the summary to the best of my capabilities. So I was wondering if this is a feasible scenario...

I do have some questions though:
1. Tyranids lack unity if their connection to the hive mind is severed (they turn into beasts) but it is possible for some hive Tyrants and other types to live separately from the hive whilst still retaining their “cognitive” abilities, so to speak. As do genestealer cults (which are present there). Am I right? Does this work?
2. Don’t know which star system or planet to use... can someone recommend me a name or maybe a system that I can create a planet for this purpose, with a hive-city planet in close proximity to Baal that has not been annihilated?
3. Can anyone suggest an approximate date for these events?

Feel free to suggest anything else or correct me...

P.S. def dread thanks for the info on detachments

1.) Yes. Borrow the Tyranid codex from a friend, or read up on the lexicanum page for specifics.
2.) There is no planet in close proximity to Baal that was not entirely and totally destroyed by Leviathan. The closest was the Cryptus system, and that was utterly destroyed pending that campaign's end.
Devastation of Baal is a book you need to read if you haven't already. Dante before preferably.
3.) Guilliman would have complete and utter numerical accuracy. This is quite simply how he operates in the new dark imperium. Dante would be able to tell him exactly how many Marines survived the battle against the tyranids, since at the end of DoB he already has this info more or less.
4.) During Leviathans attack, there were no guardsmen. All Imperial Guard regiments of size were lost at Cryptus. Everything left over was Cadian, and returned afterwards to fight Abbadon.
5.) A good portion of the Blood Angels fleet elements were scattered during the void battles, and would make excellent focal points for your story.
6.) It is clear that the Primaris are not all inherently free of the Angels curse, according to the new codex.
7.) There are currently no definite Imperial Time measuring techniques. Guilliman is attempting to standardize the many conflicting systems the imperium is currently using. Make it after Dark Imperium, and you'll be fine lore wise.
8.) Any Tyranid prescence would be weak and straggling at best. Khorne claimed the vast majority of the Hive fleet. In light of the reinforcements Guilliman brought from Baal, exterminatus would likely be seen as a far too costly option for an already starving system, and would appear silly
9.) Why the Chaos? How did they get there? They couldn't have been there before; they couldn't travel through the warp, and even if they had done so before hand they all would have died. Are they invading a weak system with almost 0 populace, resources or might simply to prove a point? This really needs to be properly fleshed out, as its the weakest part imo.
10.) Guilliman wants the Primaris to replace the non-Primaris. That is their eventual destiny. It would not be odd for him, as Lord Commander of the Imperium of man, son of the Emperor, to instruct Dante to utilize a hand-picked rapid response team created to best match the unique talents of the Blood Angels. It would fully be within his authority, character, and ability
Dante for his part, would be honored. Dante is a good son, if a bit self-important.

Hope this helps.

I don't get how saying Gulliman miscalculated, Dante ordered an 11th company or any of this spec ops stuff is less canon breaking than simply making one guy a Primaris?

And ofc, a force commander could be equivalent to a Captain even if he's not been put in charge of a Company yet. Just because the unit entry says Captain you don't have to specify which Company or even paint him as a Captain, he might just be enough of a hero that he could handle the duty if needed.

Yeah you can have a Primaris Captain.

The named captains in the book are those in command at the time the lore is set in that book, presumably a short time after the Siege of Baal.

Just set it so your force is from 150.M42 or something, it's entirely plausible that in the near future of the setting there would be Primaris captains in the Blood Angels chapter.

or just say "I do things differantly" GW's totally on board with that to the point they even allowed an offical product to do it (Space Marine)

If memory serves me right the Captains lost in the devastation of Baal were the 3rd, 4th, 6th, 8th and 9th. These were Machiavi, Castigon, Raxiatel, Zendrenael and Sendroth respectively.

The 1st, 2nd and 5th were present at the battles around the Cadian gate and survived. This would be Karlaen, Aphael and Sendini.

The head of the Sanguinary Guard died and so did the fleet master. This was Seraphan and Bellerophon. Only a single Sanguinary Guard survives.

Also the Master of the Logistam died as well. This was Adanicio.

Thanks all for the input greatly appreciated.

Neronoxx thanks for the info great help and i definitely have Dante and devastation of Baal on my reading list (reading dark imperium and fear to tread from the Horus heresy at the moment)!
Chaos is there because i plan to have a vault as one of the objectives so to speak, and chaos is interested in a particular artifact, which they could not obtain during “normal” situation, but the chaos of the tyrranid invasion provided them with opportunity, mind you it is not fully fledged chaos, but some cultists and followers of Nurgle... Is that plausible? (Btw i am still kind of working on what type of relic or artifact would interest them but this depends on how i set up my follow up. At the moment I have few options, so interesting ideas are welcome!)

Concerning some other points you made. I can’t have this taking place on ship or a cruiser, partly because of a practical reason (already in the process of making a board) but also i really wanted to set it in a imperial city ruins (my favorite setting). So i am just going to have to find something for that unless again any suggestions from you guys can help me out...

If i find a way then i think it is still plausible that a minor force of IG is left behind and not have gotten sent back to fight Abaddon, if we continue with the narrative of stranded BA defending the last remnants (be it small) of the refuges as they have no means of escape... But again for that i need a planet, be it made up (but without ruining canon) or real. It doesn’t have to be i a very close proximity but close enough to be involved in a struggle.

Good thing though that you guys helped me resolve my worry with the captain thing. Yes he is starting as force commander but then will be put in charge of spec ops, post this mission...

Again thanks all. As I proceede i will have new questions, and probably create new thread, a lot of things to take in and possibly work around.
Meanwhile, i would like to hear more input from anyone who wishes to expand upon aforementioned points!
