So I wanted to post this here because I have a suspicion that this is going to come up for me.... probably fairly often because where there are ruins, people like to put models on there, both because it provides defense against assault if there is no place to put the attackers, but also improves your armor save, and gives you better line of sight. win, win, win.

So the reason models cannot assault up onto that second floor is because per the FAQ they cannot be placed up there, and their base is more than 1 inch away from the enemy's base... assault fails, and they run around looking silly below them.

But now we take the Defiler or Soul Grinder. 2 massive models made by Games Workshop, released in a time before many of the larger walker and flier bases were released, who do not come with bases in their kit. These models are very tall, and as I understand it, all distances are measured from their "hull" including for purposes of assaulting. As such, If a unit is on the ramparts of a 2 story ruin or something, and the Defiler can get any part of his hull within 1 inch of that enemy unit... its a valid assault.

It seems like a loop hole due to basically any monster with a base being prevented from accessing this assault because they cannot get their base within 1 inch... but the giant crabs are measuring from the hull like a Tank...

I just want to make sure I'm reading this correctly, because I'll probably get some looks assaulting a unit on a ruin my opponent thought was safe by putting a crab claw within one inch and measuring from there

If it doesn't have a base, you measure to the hull. The "loop hole" is simply how the rules work.

I had this topic to.
It was 2 v 1 they said i have to handle my Defiler as he have a base...
And as i asked what about Knighttitans that have a base and slam ther huge chainsword at models that are on the second floor.... They had no answer.

So i build my Lord of Skulls these days and the same question is in my mind... when some guy wont let me charge a unit on the second flor i will quit.

Honest question: Do the arms of a walker count as part of the hull?

From the Designers Commentary
Q: When a model does not have a base, as is the case with many vehicles, what exactly is the ‘hull’ of the model?
A: The hull of these models refers to the main body of the model. It does not include things such as turrets, sponsons, aerials, banners, spikes etc. If there is still doubt, we recommend both players agree about what constitutes the hull of such models before the battle begins.

Arms are hull.

Yea that whole thing about not being able to assault unless you can place the models is one of the worst decisions they have made. In a game of models like this some abstraction is required. Saying, my guys are attacking up steps to the next floor without the model being physically within 1" is not hard, and making me place them physically within 1" is dumb and probably going to cause me to break a model at some point, and makes me not want to use ruins. Also I agree that large models should be able to attack upper floors. Again that would probably require some more abstraction, but it is better than the 5 scouts in a tower and my knight can't use his giant chainsaw to attack them.
