Looking for feedback on something that happened, wondering if it was handled correctly:

Tau Vs Deathwatch.

Markerlights fired at Deathwatch unit, I use the network ML stratagem to add D3+1 ML counters as it is used "after ML hits," - DW player uses ML clear stratagem. I argue that since both happen at the same time, and it is my (Tau player's) turn, I get to call in what order these happen. So I call it such that the DW stratagem happens first, which since there a no ML hits, prevents me from using the Network ML stratagem. So I use it elsewhere, from another unit firing ML. Obviously opponent was not happy with this.

Thoughts?

This is indeed the case. Some will point out that one says "after" and one says "immediately after", but since "after" can also be "immediately after", it's a non-issue. If the Deathwatch Stratagem wanted to always work after, it would have to say "after a DEATHWATCH unit from your army has had Markerlight tokens placed next to them", which occurs after being hit and after the stratagem.

My best guess is that the Stratagem isn't a be-all and end-all NO MARKERLIGHTS FOR U! stratagem, it's to punish Tau players who try and get greedy while trying for 5 markerlights.

I'd argue that the "instead of" is replacing the 1 markerlight;

So, you shoot your markerlight, it lands; what's landing is 1d3+1 instead of just 1 - at which point, your opponent decides to have them all dropped.

You can't "un-use" a stratagem after it's been played, as the timing restrictions dictate what can be used, and when - at least, that's never been possible before. -- And even if you could, I'd argue that the "one per phase" limit would apply regardless.

It'd be like the difference between attempting and manifesting a psychic power; it doesn't matter whether it goes off or not, it's "one-of per X" has already been used.

You place markerlights after they have been hit. Once you place the 1+D3 markerlights, it's too late for the Deathwatch player to use the stratagem, because they must use it "immediately after" being hit.
