Just finished reading the ebook for this. Was pretty good, I think it did a good job with the theme of death and exploring how the two factions tick. Also having a city as a central location meant I wasn’t as lost as when I read Wardens of the Everqueen which was a deluge of random encounters.

I did have some complaints:

Spoiler:
I quite liked the twist about Calys being the street urchins mother. I mean it was pretty obvious but it was quite a fascinating idea. Storm casts forget their past lives so presumably it’s not impossible that this sort of thing could happen. Plus it parallels Pham going evil. However, the author doesn’t resolve that plot thread. Calys is told by Phaum in the final encounter that “I killed you while your daughter watched” but we don’t see any of the characters acknowledge or deal with that when it’s done. Since this is something that’s teased throughout a good chunk of the novel it is a major problem.

Plus the Battle of Glimsforge isn’t resolved.

But aside from that it’s a good read and I’d be willing to look at more of these novels in the future. I’d like to see them do more stuff with the Aelves and Sylvaneth.

Agreed it was a good read.

I do love Josh Reynolds world building and it had cats being awesome so that was a bonus!

re your points:

Spoiler:
Agreed re Calys - great idea, maybe it will continue in future novels - there were qutie a few seeds planted - like the Executioner Entyr Rocha and her lost love.

I think JR stated he was not supposed to fully tell the story of Glymmsforge - its also in General Handbook 2018 where Nagash fights the Clestiant Prime and a few bits that don't quite jell with the novel but thats fairly normal.

I enjoyed the usual interpaly between Akrhan and Neferata and that he is just trying to sort it so Simgar and Nagash get along.

"Unimaginably ancient xenos artefact somewhere on the planet, hive fleet poised above our heads, hidden 'stealer broods making an early start....and now a bloody Chaos cult crawling out of the woodwork just in case we were bored. Welcome to my world, Ciaphas."

"I will admit that some Primachs like Russ or Horus could have a chance against an unarmed 12 year old novice but, a full Battle Sister??!! One to one? In close combat? Perhaps three Primarchs fighting together... but just one Primarch?" da001
