I'm pretty tired of spamming boyz, weirdboyz, and mek gunz in order to do well with my Orks, so I've been messing around with some different styles of lists to see if I could come up with something a little more interesting that might still have a shot at being competitive.

I based this list on the Blitz Brigade of 7th edition. I know Battlewagons are painfully overcosted now, but I thought maybe if I kept them cheap I could still potentially do okay with them.

The plan is pretty obvious, one big mek paired up with one boyz mob in each battlewagon. Turn 1 rush up the table as far as I can get, turn 2 unload all the boyz and starting charging things, dakka jets fly around and dakka things.

Is it total garbage or do I have a shot here?

Well, i guess if you manage to get an enemy on the wrong leg at the start of the game and or get the first turn so that you allready moved some inches torwards them, then it could work
Dakkajets are never really a bad investment.
The main problem is, as soon as you fight something with good bs or AA they will fall out of the sky fast.
Battlewagons are as you said massively overpriced.
It could work, it could, but as much as i am wanting to be optimistic to see some variety in Orkz lists, i belive you lack boys.

GW:"Space marines got too many options to balance, therefore we decided to legends HH units."
Players: "why?!? Now we finally got decent plastic kits and you cut them?"
Chaos marines players: "Since when are Daemonengines 30k models and why do i have NO droppods now?"
GW" MONEY.... erm i meant TOO MANY OPTIONS (to resell your army to you again by disalowing former units)! Do you want specific tyranid fighiting Primaris? Even a new sabotage lieutnant!"
Chaos players: Guess i stop playing or go to HH.

I don't know if you abide by the rule of 3 that GW put forward as a recommended rule for tournament matched play but if you do then you've one Battlewagon too many.

I think you can save some points on Big Meks here by instead running one on a bike. One Big Mek on Warbike with KFF should be able to cover three Battlewagons on turn one, two will give you more options for manoeuvrability. Ghazghkull might go well with this list as you've got no Breakin' Heads morale mitigation or any real big punch for high T/W models.

Saying all that I've had very little luck running lists like my old Blitz Brigade this edition, it did alright against a friendly SM list but didn't even get off the ground against Tau. I hope you fare well!

Try 3 Battle Wagons (counts as) Big Trakks. Then plus one Wagon. You mentioned you were sick of spamming Boyz... Buuuut you're spamming Boyz.... What about a TankBustas unit? Do you NEED all those CPs?

Oh. Too many big meks too. 3 max. Maybe weirdboy or pain boy or waagh banner nob?

I had come up with something similar but in place of the jets took a load of mekguns and kannons etc.
And a big unit of grots to sit backfield.

Did you try the list out?

Fewer than 20 boyz is not really worth the trouble. That's the main problem with the battlewagon - it can't carry anything but the minimum viable unit, and as soon as you lose some - and you will - your combat effectiveness is shot.

A couple of potential tricks:

1. Fill a battlewagon with tankbustas.
2. Mod one into a Big Trakk with a Big Skorcha, then put some Nobz with combi-skorchas inside.
3. Put some MANZ in a wagon. Or Lootas. Or, stormboyz.

All of those can work. Especially with the 3 jets - your opponent will run out of guns at some point.

I'm hoping when we get a codex these kinds of options will become more viable. So say we all...
