I had an opponent use this strategem to reroll a successful armor save recently. The rules for this strategem just says to reroll a dice. Of course he then failed the save for a guardsman so I couldn’t keep the unit locked in combat his following turn. Is there any verbiage in the main rule-book that states you can’t reroll a successful roll?

Bow down to Guilliman for he is our new God Emperor!

DakkaDakka is really the place where you need anti-tank guns to kill basic dudes, because anything less isn't durable enough.

That's legal, I believe - I had an opponent do something similar some time ago, except he actually made the second save.

It's odd, but legal - I like to imagine a commander issuing a command for the guardsman to lay down and die.

"Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment." Words to live by.

You can re-roll any dice, even a "successful" one. It's perfectly legal to use it to try and fail a save. It's also legal to use a "worse" save if you want to. If I have a 2+ save and a 6+ invulnerable save, it's perfectly fine to use the 6+ invulnerable to increase the chances of my model dying if I so desire. The reverse is also true and a particularly good trick for daemons to pull.

Okay then second question would it be illegal to reroll the save after passing the morale check?

Double Heresy illegal. You can't go back in time because you didn't like the result of the morale test. Totally different phases.

When does the strat say it needs to be used?

Okay I thought so - the rerolling a successful save threw me.
