I used to buy a lot of Warhammer 40k books when I was playing the game. 2 years after quitting playing due to work, I am fond of the new setting in the 42nd millennium and willing to get back into the reading habit. Do you guys out there here any recommendation on what I should buy from Black Library while waiting for them to release Ciaphas Cain Omnibus and the newest novel in that series?

Some criteria:

+ Novels and short stories. No audio log.

+ Eldar point of view or Eldar as allies are preferred. I hate anything about them written by Gav Thorpe. He butchered their lore so hard anyone who has not read the Codex will misunderstand the Eldar now. However, the new Azrael and The Last Hunt novels have portrayed the Eldar more positively and realistically (in the Warhammer 40k universe), so I do hope more authors will follow.

+ Antagonists preferred not Orks, Tyranids (GC included) or Chaos. These are too common. I want to see the Tau, Necron and Drukhari as the opponent.

+ Absolutely no excessive lore explanation. I already went through the Ultramarine Omnibus to understand the Space Marines.

+ Quick-paced and action focused. Bad characterization is accepted.

+ No whiny characters.

+ Not taken from the Codex or GW official publications. Fall of Cadia, War for Armageddon, etc...

+ No Mechanicus. I can't read their language.

+ Should be good to read. War of Secret and Ghost Halls are stories I look forward to but I heard they both suck.

+ I am looking at Memphiston: The Ravenent Crusade. If someone has read it, do you recommend?

Thanks for posting.

My favorite books are the Path of the Dark Eldar by Andy Chambers. Really good book with good characters from the DE point of view.
Another book that includes DE, but a lot less, is Blood Gorgons. Its about a renegade chaos chapter. That may turn you off, but its incredibly well done

Dan Abnett-Titanicus. Though there are no Eldar involved.

Night Lords trilogy by ADB.
Rereading them at present and they're darn solid.

I have read both the Dark Eldar trilogy and the Blood Gorgons. These are quite old by now.

I like Path of the Dark Eldar much better because it feels more like the author is trying to give the characters' motivation rather than throwing plot-devices to justifies poorly fleshed-out characters. The ending is a total mess, however. Vect invites 100 Archons to his court and kills about half of them. That's just dumb. Not a single Archon refuses to come and either rebel against Vect or escape from Commorragh?

Blood Gorgons is not very well written. The depiction of Plague Marines falls short of my expectation because the author doesn't want the Blood Gorgons to be completely crippled by the Death Guards. The chapter themselves are cool with their culture and background, but not the story the novel tries to tell.

Titanicus is very old by now and the lore might not even be up to date. Recently, I have checked out Gates of the Devourer and Fury of the God Machine. These seem to be how Titans are depicted right now. I have read Titan comic (Imperius Dictatio) also by Dan Abnett and found it quite good.

Anything before 2013 where 6th edition came out. Preferably, the books take into account the newest updates in 8th edition.

What has 8th rules to do with Titans depicted in Abnett´s novel?

Both of the Fabius Bile novels. Elder are the antagonists to an extent in both of them.

It's mainly Harlequins and they play a little second fiddle in the second book but they are written really well. They're the Eldar equivalent of Marines in that they'll just appear out of nowhere and start taking names, and are scary as feth.

I really enjoyed Nemesis from the Horus heresy series as that is not focused on the marines and was different from the rest of the series, one of the few I have read more than once.
