So a friend and I were discussing the Strike and Fade stratagem and trying to figure out the extent of what it can be used for. The text reads:
"Use this stratagem at the start of the shooting phase. Pick a Dal'yth unit from your army. That unit may immediately shoot and then move up to 6" as if it were the movement phase. They cannot advance as a part of this move."

Now, based on our reading it seems like you can pick a unit that's locked in combat and shoot with them as per "That unit may immediately shoot ." Now, you can't normally shoot in combat, but specific overrules general and it does just say immediately shoot. Now, obviously you can't shoot the squad you are in combat with because they are in combat... with you.

For the movement part, you wouldn't be able to just move as you are locked in combat. But since you may move "up to 6" as if it were the movement phase" does this mean you can shoot then fall back up to 6"? This would let you do things like shoot heavy weapons at full BS then fall back.

Thoughts?

If you're within 1" of the enemy, you cannot shoot. The stratagem doesn't give you an exception to that.

You can fall back though after "shooting", which would free you up to shoot in the shooting phase if you can FLY.

If you're within 1" of the enemy, you could fire your pistols, then use the movement from the stratagem to fall back. There's no explicit permission in the stratagem to fire non-pistols if you're within 1" of an enemy, so you still have the normal limitation on shooting when locked in combat - pistols only.

Actually, no you can't. The stratagem gives you permission to shoot then move. It doesn't give you permission to move then shoot. From the stratagem, you've used up your "shooting" before you move.

My mistake, I read it as happening at the start of your movement phase.

Well; you could always fall back in the movement phase; pop the strat, fire and move.

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.
Stop looking for buzz words and start reading the whole sentences.

Except you can’t shoot if you Fall Back except if a Stratagem/ability specifically overrides that. This does not state you can shoot even if you fell back, so you can’t.

Well, to piggy back off of this thread. A friend of mine has come up with an interesting scenario using this Stratagem, here is the scenario:

-Unit is inside transport, transport moves in the movement phase.

Can Strike and Fade be played be used on the unit inside a transport to disembark in the shooting phase?

My buddy is arguing yes.

I said no, because although Strike and Fade says a unit may shoot and than move like it is the movement phase, it ISN'T a new movement phase, so any restrictions from the movement phase would still be applied (like being unable to disembark from a transport that moved during the movement phase).

Another reason I said no is that embarked units cannot "be affected in any way whilst they are embarked."

Don't most tau fly so falling back then shooting then moving seems to be fine?

on the other hand Nobz they decided it was in the best interest of ork society that they "Go Green" as such they specifically modified their warbikes to not make giant smoke, dust, grit, clouds. Instead they are all about driving with clean air, one might say their bikes Gak out rainbows.

Second paragraph under 'Embark' in the 'Transports' sidebar on page 183: "Embarked units cannot normally do anything or be affected in any way whilst they are embarked."

Unless the stratagem says it can be used on an embarked unit (and it doesn't), it can't be used on an embarked unit.

This is the right answer. You can't use the stratagem in question on embarked units.
