For some time I have been building terrain. Last year I build two 4"x2" plates of urban terrain in an attempt to build my own table. However I concluded this was way to large to move and being only 3 pieces gave no way of variation. Thus I set out to build another table. This one inspired on the "Ice Mines" table in IA: Model Masterclass. That table is way to big so I had to scale it down a bit and work with the materials I had at hand.

Thus I set out, creating 6 square (2"x2") boards. Building up with Styrodur and using loads of moulded rock (about 10 half-kilo packages of model clay went into the rocks) and bits of terrain I got the six boards completed in about four months. Painting took some time and after that it was applying the snow. I tested different snows but use Krycell in the end because it falls beautifull on the rocks, terrain and wrecks. It was hard to get it right on the textured surface but it worked. The water effects were not as succesful. Liquid water was absorbed by the styrodur (which wasn't sealed all the way through (even though I used 4 liters of white glue) and seaped away completely. AK water cracked up and doesn't look right. After some extensive playtesting I will fix the water (perhaps add ice as well) and add some more snow where needed.

Alls pics made with a cellphone an bad lighting, hence the different colors. Some more pics will folow from the playtest games.

I played two intensive (2000 vs 2000) games on the table last saturday. I was scared the snow would not hold and cover models and dice. But nothing like that happened. Even the pounding of 60+ dice when my catachan Highlanders charged a wraithnight didn't loosen the snow.

Yesterday I started building some more terrain: another platform and a set of pipelines to make sure there is some more scatter terrain. Furthermore I hope to pick up some containers and the crain set at Warhammerfest in a couple of weeks.
Plans are already made for table number 2. That one will feature trenchlines and other defences. As well as a big gun battery (like the Forgeworld tile) and rocket launch-site. I plan to make it so the 'roof' of the big bunkers can be lifted so the interior of the bunkers can also be used for special scenario's/ skirmish/ necromunda or Killteam.

Thanks a lot sir. You don't see Victoria miniatures around here all that often. Without a doubt they are the best Guard mini's available. I am currently painting up the 6th squad of these lads for a tourney in september.

I love the cold atmosphere. You capture it perfectly, and I know from having lived close to the arctic circle (okay, maybe your table is brighter than Alaska in December... but the frost on every surfacd nails it). I mean, I think I feel my boogers wanting to freeze and my eyelashes getting ice fog when Iook at some of those scenes.

Thanks a lot for the nice comments y'all. This weekend I'll play another game on the board and will make some more pictures.

Haha, this was indeed the general feel I was aiming for. The realistic snow and frost effect was done with snow from 'Precisision ice & snow". Their products are awesome but not really suitable for the size I was aiming for. I used a total of 8 bags of snow. 5 bottels of hairspray and 4 bottles of clear laquer.

I guess it took me some 100 hours for the table and 20 for the terrain. Almost finished now as I'm working on the last pieces of terrain and think I will add some molten snow patches for diversity.

It was a model which I bought on eBay. Turned out to be recast and far from perfect.
