Subject: Magnus worth the monetary and points cost for a Thousand Sons army?

Just curious. Is Magnus worth it, in your opinion, for a Thousand Sons army? I know that most have moved from Mortarion to Typhus in Death Guard. Is Ahriman better than Magnus, or is Magnus worth it?
Thanks

Define worth it. He's a huge badass model and the Primarch of the legion, that alone would be reason enough for me to get him if I was a TS player .

The fact you asked would indicate to me the answer for you would be no.

Not a bleeding chance. Unless wings stop counting for LoS he's going to be basically impossible to hide from a turn 1 wolfing right in the face by long range weapons. His entire gimmick is eating up 1/4 of your army and relies on you going first to not lose him the second your opponent gets to shoot him.

Yes, he's worth it, but you have to build a list that protects him. He's very solid and don't let people fool you, it's not easy to remove a 3++ 18 wound model in 1 turn. Remember, everything dies if you fail your saves.

Ahriman is probably the more competitive option, but nothing beats the feeling of bringing your PRIMARCH to the table. He's no slouch either. Ahriman is probably better in the long run due to being a character that can hide and still cast lots of powers (and casts better than Magnus once Magnus is very injured), and you can fit in more stuff alongside him. But, man, Magnus, wow. He's just great. Your hardest decision will be whether or not to run him with nipplehorns. Me? I said yes to the nipplehorns, because there's a cool undercurrent there of animal shamanistic ritual magic that comes forth from it. He's a centrepiece model through and through.

In a straight either/or, Ahriman wins hands down. But that's not to say you shouldn't buy yourself a Magnus. He's tons of fun, but not as competitive as he was...

He’s fun. He won’t be in tournament winning TS lists, but then again tournament winning TS lists are souped up Chaos lists leveraging TS purely for smite spam.
He’s a solid B, next to Ahriman’s and Daemon Princes’ A grade.

generally speaking, a model like Magnus, Morty and Gulliman you buy as much because you love the army, and want a big ass center peice as you do for a pure playing piece.

You can buff magnus to insane levels with warptime, prescience, diabolic strength, glamour of tzeentch, temporal manipulation and weaver of faith. Very easy to do with tsons.

He is worth it if you get the 1st turn. 3++ and -1 to hit takes basically a whole armies firepower to shoot him down. And more often than not an entire army of shooting is still not enough to cripple him let alone killing him.
And he cannot be ignored because he has a 32" movement, always D6 MW smites and very strong close combat ability.

Hes worth it but suffers greatly from not going first. A lot of models are like that though.
I think he probably works best in a list that isn't really thousands sons but an an auxillary to a tzeentch daemon list with lots of LOC or fatey. Basically monster mash.
Increases you chance of going firs tif you only have like 5 drops.

Even if he dies first turn the rest of your army doesnt suffer any damage.

He's awesome, but...
When facing a shadowsword or a knight or...he'll be dead or very crippled if you don't get first turn.
If you do then you're spending all his spells on protection buffs, so, you need to get him to combat pretty quickly.
Otherwise any other army will usually have a hard time bringing him down without sacrificing a ton of firepower.
