the two systems seem very similar to me,what are the major differences, why would I choose one over the other?
Ive noticed Necromunda has a lot of expansion books, what do they actually add to the game?

Kill Team lets you use your 40k models, which is pretty handy if you already play 40k. Though to be fair some people use Necromunda gangs as Cultists and such.

Necromunda has much more fleshed out campaign mechanics - your team has credits and territory, they earn, you spend the money on new stuff, as opposed to Kill Team where you just have a point limit and play to that.

I’d say the key differentiator is availability of games. Are you wanting to have games against the general public? I’d recommend marching down to your FLGS and asking the staff there about any organised regular play for either. Go and talk to the players. In my local area, no one plays Necromunda, but everyone has 40k models and a willingness to play Kill Team.

There’s no point choosing the better system if there are no games.

I find that Necormunda has alot more ability to customise models - the range and loadout of the ones in Kill Team is very restrictive.

However agree that likelhood of getting games is important.

Kill team is IMO the better choice. You don't need to buy more kits, you don't need to organise a campaign, you don't need to change your wargear over time and it's much easier to get an opponent to jump into kill team than to try and get them invested in necromunda. Necromunda is only better if you have a group of people committed to playing it together. Kill team you just show up, ask if anyone wants to try a game and people can throw something together using the models they have on them and no arguing over how your gang has a bunch of upgrades you've bought over time playing with others.

I'd suggest Killteam, basically because its a game system that existing 40k players can jump into much easier.

At my FLGS, I can pick up a game of Killteam, and even give my own demo/tutorial to someone who hasn't played but is interested.

With Necromunda, you'd need a few more players to keep the platform alive.

Depends on which one even has a playerbase you can be a part of. Kill team is probably easier to get into, but it's imo less interesting in terms of its possibilities. Necromunda is just a more compelling/interesting setting for skirmish games, it's a better vibe. Kill team while I prefer it over regular 40k is lacking in that certain flavor, and a lack of character. Both games are what you make of it though, neither of these games are going to be fun unless you're playing with the right people.

Necromunda needs a dedicated group who is willing to invest a lot of time into the setting and is willing to buy models specifically for that game. Anyone who plays 40k has the models to play Kill team and chances are you have enough models to make a kill team for factions you don't even play regularly. For example I have chaos models from the assassin box game from a while back and I managed to make a kill team out of those. Kill team can be played as a quick pick up game, Necromunda not as much.
