So I'm considering adding a small Renegades&Heretics force to my Alpha Legion for fluff reasons, basically a couple of Marauder units (plasma and/or melta).

Have been thinking through some transport options, and while it seemed like a choice between the (relatively) cheap Chimera, and the somewhat more expensive Valkyrie. As it would be the only flyer in my list, it would be a bit of a target for any enemy anti-air that exists, unfortunately.

Then I noticed the little Arvus. No grav chute, about the middle-ground in points between a chimera and a valkyrie, and... well, it deepstrikes?

So it seems to be a drop pod with wings, that can fire 12 bolter shots a turn.

Honestly not sure if that's a pointless ability, or a situationally useful one. Deepstrike means it can't deploy it's cargo until (at the earliest) turn 3 I believe...

Something about it drew my eye, but I have done a lot of googling and searching and noone seems to be using them, so I'm kinda assuming they fall under the 'useless' category (otherwise people would be spamming them! Dakkites are nothing if not predictable lol)

I don't know how good the rules are for it this edition but in the pasted it had horrible rules, is a rather expensive model and a lot of people don't want to deal with resin. I'd imagine the reason you don't see it much is not that many people own one.

The context is important. Is it a super cool, and unique way to transport an army? Probably. Love the idea. Is it competitive? I would bet not.

I'm looking in Army Builder, maybe I have my filters wrong, but can chaos renegades take Chimera-Valkyrie-Arvus Lighter?

In previous edition it sucks ass, but it was a cool model. I got it cause it looked like the Star Trek shuttles.

Either filters are wrong, or army builder is wrong. Renegades and Heretics have the Arvus on their "Can be taken from Imperial Guard" list of vehicles.

It's always been crap, something you usually only buy because you either like the model or want to use it in a specific scenario. It's better in 8th as the 7th Ed. rules stated you always had to make Snap-Shots with it, but it's still pretty piss-poor. Just get a Valkyrie instead.

Edit: Noticed you're going for R+H. In that case if you can't take Valks then you may be stuck with the Arvus.

Valk is allowed too, it just costs more. Big jump between chimera and valk, with Arvus in the middle.

I really like the design, and I've wanted to get one for ages. I just have not been able to justify it to myself. It would go really well with the new Rogue Trader stuff.
