just wanted to check something, so for a death guard kill team, you can take normal bolter Plague Marines, Plague Marine Gunners who can take special/heavy shooting weapons, and Plague Marine Fighters, who can take special melee weapons...now, it also says "One Plague Marine in your Kill Team may take an Icon of Despair"...would that mean that only a "Plague Marine" (standard bolter dude) can take an icon? or would that apply for "Plague Marine Gunner" or "Plague Marine Fighter" too?

My read would be any plague marine model, so any specialist would be able to take it or even the champion.
But not sure if there is any other mention of it elsewhere in the faction rules (dont think so )

That is incorrect. It says "One Plague Marine in your kill team may take an Icon of Despair." A "Plague Marine Gunner" is not a "Plague Marine", the same way it is not a "Plague Champion" and cannot take a Power Fist.

Each profile has an individual name, thus is a different model. The rule would need to say "One model in your kill team may take an Icon of Despair." or "One Plague Marine or Plague Marine Gunner in your kill team may take an Icon of Despair."

If you need more "proof", check the Deathwatch codex errata, where they made it so that the rule "For every five Intercessors, one may take an auxiliary grenade launcher." instead reads "For every five Intercessors and/or Intercessor Sergeants, one may take an auxiliary grenade launcher." which proves an Intercessor Sergeant is not an Intercessor.

the wording is doing my head in

"Up to two Plague Marines in your kill team may be Plague Marine Gunners, up to two Plague Marines in your kill team may be Plague Marine Fighters, and one Plague Marine in your kill team can be a Plague Champion"

"One Plague Marine in your kill team may take an Icon of Despair"

for the icon, does it just broadly mean plague marines, as in all varieties?...or does it specifically mean Plague Marine, as in standard bolter plague marine?...does making a Plague Marine, a Plague Marine Fighter, make him specifically a "Plague Marine Fighter", and not a "Plague Marine", so doesn't get the option to take an icon?

It specifically means Plague Marine.

V - all four variants of plague marine, are all grouped under the banner of Plague Marine too, just to further complicate matters...

Only one normal plague marine (model above the gunner) may use an icon of despair.

If you look at the wording on other datasheets, you will see that where any version of the model can take an option, it is specifically called out as "This model may..." (c.f. Ork Boy, Deathwatch Veteran).

The wording here is "One Plague Marine may..." so only a basic Plague Marine (and only one of them) may take the Icon.
