Working in a bit of a backwards fashion, I am going to be uploading my
WIP pictures of my Renegade Nurgle Porphyrion, and detailed writeups on how it was completed. Eventually the thread will catch up to where I currently am, and I will continue to update this thread as I make small adjustments and details to the build.
The original plan was to buy a Warlord Titan and do a proper chaos conversion. After about a month of looking up references and planning, I realized that not only do I have nowhere to put a Warlord titan, as I live in an apartment with little room, but I also have never taken on a project this large. There is a good chance that I would burn out midway through, just like I did with my warhound titan, which still isn't completed!!! Dropping hot wads of cash on a warlord was too risky, I needed to prove to myself that I could stick with a large conversion long enough to finish it. I decided on the porphyrion for 3 reasons.
1. It looks super cool and I've wanted one since they were leaked.
2. The structure of it seems close to a warlord, so it might be good practice.
3. Chaos porphyrions don't have models, and no-one had made one, so I had a chance to set the standard for them.
My porphyrion arrived in early May, and I had very little ideas on what I was going to do when it first arrived. This log will detail my thoughts (as strange, silly, or arrogant as they may get) on the build, and descriptions of my techniques. I hope you enjoy it, and it inspires you to go big on your next build.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Once the model arrived, I was desperate to start building it. In the past I've ruined potential conversions due to my excitement for simply building the model. I resisted the urge with the porphyrion, which was very, VERY difficult for me. I started by building the torso, as there was very little I could do to it, conversion wise, that building would ruin.
The original plan was to have a chaos corrupted pilot, like the Chaos warhound and reaver. I had a Penitent engine bit and an idea! I used a dremel to remove the head, working with pewter is never fun, but I knew what to expect from a previous
Huntsman of Khorne Conversion I tried maybe, 10 different heads and bits, and couldn't find one that was satisfactory. The skull I ended up using was originally just meant to be a placeholder. I thought it looked OK, but wasn't sold on it. Feedback from online communities gave me more confidence in it and I decided to make it permanent.
The open hatch was a very late choice in the build. I had a few ideas of what I wanted to do, but didn't think I was a good enough sculptor to pull any of them off. I waited for inspiration to appear from anywhere, for something to click, but nothing ever really did.
I did quickly realize that I didn't want the imperial trim. Warhound and Reaver have fancy chaos trim,
FW chaos knight upgrade kit has fancy chaos trim, so the porphyrion should also have really awesome chaos trim! I used a dremel with a sanding head to remove the trim. If you look closely, you can see some areas are much rougher than others. I tried to smooth them out by using finer heads for the dremel, and eventually fine sand paper. In some areas I pushed a little too hard and broke through the model, but it's a chaos conversion, so it's gotta have battle damage!
