I am getting back into 40k after a long ten year break. 8th is much different than 5th which is the last edition I played. The biggest thing in my opinion is how they total killed close combat armies with being able to leave combat. With this being said I recently picked up a beautiful kh orne army that I would like to play with in tournaments. So here are my questions, first off I got some renegade knights with the army can these be used with the regular rules or do I have to use the renegade knight rules, I like the imperium version better. Second thing I am open to throwing other choas in there like nurgle or thousand sons. I will tell you what I have.
!75 Berserkers (Lots of heavy conversion work with various undead bits)
1 lord of skulls
1 Knight Castellan
1 Knight Gallant
2 Warglaives
Kharne
Valkia the Bloody
Demon Prince
2 Rhinos
1 Predator
1 Vindicator
15 Raptors
5 Warptalons
2 Spawn
40 Bloodletters
3 Bloodcrushers
FW Bloodthirster
FW Brass Scorpion

So I returned from last playing 5th about a year ago and have played a lot of games since. Close combat can still absolutely wreck face you just need to learn tricks around abusing pile in consolidating etc. You (unfortunately) need to use the renegade rules which are generally inferior to their imperial counterparts.

Some standouts from what you have. Big units of bloodletters either 30 so they hit on 2s or 20 (max allowed to deepstrike for 1 CP). A khorne daemon prince with the axe relic (skullreaver) is epic. Hoardes of bezerkers with transports works well. Both gallant and Castallan (Although Castallan is probably awaiting the nerf bat in chapter approved in December).

Things that aren't great this edition, from what I've used, bloodcrushers, warglaives and raptors. Bloodthirster can be brutal but is easily shot down, you can give him the armour of scorn to help his survivability but I would only use him when you have several big targets.

If you're adding stuff from other chaos armies, plagueburst crawlers are great and cheap. Thousabd son supreme command detachments with Ahriman and 2-3 daemon princes works as the best psykers in the game atm.
