Recently i've broken down yet another barrier for myself, in that i've bought Nurgle Daemons, and ive also told myself i'd get Slaanesh when the Wrath and Rapture box arrives.

That being said, i'm QUICKLY approaching the 20,000 point mark, and have filled give or take two small book cases with minis. (I realize I can just put them in shoe boxes and downside heavily, but I like lookin' at em.)
The upside is that I am staying STRICTLY within Chaos, and I have absolutely no inclination to get Death Guard, mostly from how horribly overpriced and mono-pose the entire line is.

What do you guys think? I'm spending within my means and buying PLENTY used and cheap, so it's not hurting my wallet. And im also assembling and at least base priming all the stuff I buy. But would you still consider this amount a little large for a person who started playing when 8th arrived? (As in, I started playing when the Indexes first arrived.)

This is a collectors hobby. You do what you enjoy. There is never enough if you enjoy owning and doing it.
Odds are you will likely never really play with all those models, but I’m sure that’s not why you bought every single one.

Saying that I’m kinda in your boat as well except I’ve been playing and collecting on and off for some 20+ years. I like building the models and I get into painting moods like once. a year where I can paint a good chunk of my models, but I’m perpetually behind. I realize nothing looks quite as good in a book case or table top then a well painted army so you got to work on that too at times. So limit your purchase to what you like and just start working on painting your collection and maybe invest into a 3rd book case .

Personally to much is once you start buying things that end up still in the box in the back of your closet a few months latter. To me that's when a player has reached the point of buying things just to buy them.

True that, im very VERY adamant on buying for the model before buying for the rules. If im gonna buy 90 bloodletters, I better damn well enjoy their aesthetic.

While it is obviously up to everyone how and where they enjoy the hobby, I think large army collections can be wasteful (even when you can afford it).

I'm more impressed with a completely painted force/collection than I am of any gigantic force. Nothing is more unimpressive than 10-20K points of unpainted grey plastic. Also, I like to see people put terrain and a suitable table before a massive amount of miniatures. At some point you need a place to play, and I frequently see tables and terrain relegated to a distant third behind buying/building more models. Also a large collection is financially bad if you're going to abandon it when an edition change rolls around or you change your mind and start another army. I sell used 40K stuff on commission and it's heartbreaking to see how many people throw away heaps of money because their attention span or interest is so minimal.

Generally speaking, large collections are cool and fun (if occasionally still wasteful!). It's all up to you of course, and as long as it's not financially taxing - go nuts.

You do you.

'Enough' is a subjective consideration; only you can answer when you have enough.

For me it is "do i play with these ever?". 5 land raiders cool. Do i ever use them? If they are same pattern i would need to field all in same game.

Now if 20k forms up out of different units and you switch lists often fair play! That's how my orks came up to 12k. Only waste so far was second stompa and that was part of ridic good deal anyway so was essentially free(and gives second clan to choose at least)
