In a couple months I will be attending a tournament that will be using power levels. I haven't used PL much this edition but when creating rough drat lists I am struggling to bring anything meaningful to the table.

The tournament will be 75PL and didn't say anything about detachments or FW yet.

So my question is has anyone had success with running PL with marines? I am finding it hard to fit anything in when my base Captain, Lt., and 3x scouts take up a third of the PL.

I feel like running more elite units such has Sternguard or Vets could help more, but that adds up quickly.

I am open to most units as I have a couple months to gather models/paint.

Any advice is welcome!

Thanks

Some odd situation in using PL not points level woyld be, you might like to take Tactical Squads instead of Scouts to fill the troops slot. Since they are cheaper, Contrast to when using points.

That's what I was starting to think. Give them a plasma and combi-plasma

Before advising I would ask what the idea behind the PL tournament is?

If it is meant to be for new and/or casual players I'd just take a standard list with normal equipment and have some fun games.

If for some reason it is a full competitive event but is using PL then expect some proper broken gak!

For the second option you are playing marines which is actually pretty good as you have lots of equipment options which is what breaks PL.

Take tacticals and give them all the best options, lascannons, powerfists, combi weapons.

Full Lascannon predators or devs.

Vanguard and sternguard with lots of upgrades.

Basically any squad with lots of upgrade choices, when PL was designed it was costed against the unit having roughly halfway between the most expensive and least expensive equipment loadouts so you get the most bang for you points by giving all your units the most equipment possible.

40,000pts
8,000pts
3,000pts
3,000pts
6,000pts
2,000pts
1,000pts
:deathwatch: 3,000pts
:Imperial Knights: 2,000pts
:Custodes: 4,000pts

Surprisingly its a GT so I am going to assume some level of competitiveness.

That was the route I was thinking. Just adding as much as I can while still making them viable.

In my experience when you play Elite armies with Power Level you need to select specific units that can be cheaply added via Points, but are far more expensive in PL format - ala Tactical Marines.

I just built a 2000 point Ultramarine army with Calgar, several vehicles, dread and tacticals. When I calculate it at Power Level it equals 117.

So you should run Tacticals at PL and max out weapons, but stay away from stuff that you would want to run the middle of the pack with that are high in PL.

I think going the Company Vet route makes the most sense. While they are 1 power level higher than Sternguard they can be equipped to my liking much better. Plus if I kit of the Sternguard I am just wasting their special issue ammo.

I make bad decisions and think they are good.
