So I know the Night Lords aren't a "cult legion" and aren't as big into the chaosy-stuff as the Black Legion or Word Bearers, but I'm thinking at least some of them would use daemons. Is there anything in-lore to act as precedent for the Night Lords using daemons in a subtle way, as a sort of extension of their psychological warfare? I'm thinking they could summon daemons only partially into realspace, such that they could give horrible nightmares to the enemy and possess those whose minds were sufficiently broken by the Night Lords' terror tactics.

Seems reasonable to me. They don't worship specific Chaos gods (or the pantheon as a whole), but there's no reason an enterprising sorcerer couldn't learn to summon demons. They seem very willing to use whatever tools are at their disposal, and that seems like it would qualify.

there are possessed night lords in the lore (the exalted) and Daemon princes (Krieg Acerbus, Gendor Skraivak) in the trilogy at least 2 of Talos warband are devotees of individual gods (Cyrion-Slaanesh, Uzas-Khorne). they have sorcerers, and I imagine anyone living in the warp long enough with the night lords mindset would certainly cavort with daemons.

Reason #537 raptors should have at least 2A

They have warp talons in Carcharadons: Red Tithe, which are part daemon or something. In fact, the war band in Red Tithe are much more like Chaos marines we’re used to than in the ADB Night Lords trilogy.

If you have the time, I suggest reading Lord of the Night. It's about a Night Lord from the time of the Heresy who's been stuck in the warp for 10000 years, so you can see the difference between what the NL were and what they've become, including the influence of chaos. Also, it's a really good book.

In any case, even if they don't openly worship chaos, I think the NL aren't above using it as a mean to an end. It may not be their first choice, but if daemons are the best way to get results, then why not?

Yup, daemonic terror tactics would be very much up the Night Lord's alley.

Night lords 3.5 were only allowed to ally Furies.

There's also the fluff snippet that mentions them summoning in Furies after a battle to consume the dead in a carrion feast.

IMO the puritan Night Lords are probably less common than we think.

They are constantly traveling IN the warp, so they still need support from the gods. It's hard to deny their powers, even if they tried. In Lord of the Night, Zso Sahaal offers a prayer to them, not out of fanaticism but "just in case they were listening".

They despise weakness, and worship is suggesting something is greater than yourself. They were also one of the first true Chaos Undivided legions. You could only give them the Mark of Chaos Undivided, or no mark. That is what I liked about them. Sure there are 4 gods, but Chaos Itself is the means to the end.

Now, BL writers decided to OD on that particular aspect because it's different than Word Bearers, the only other Legipn to have been fleshed out by novels.
