I think because I posted this on the weekend, it may have gotten lost under newer posts (or no one has anything to say )
I was just hoping someone had some comments/advise for my boys as they build up their forces

I think your sons' Marines look great! They remind me of how I got into the hobby myself, with a couple of squads of the boys in blue!

As for things they could improve, I think a wash would give the armour a bit more definition. Applying a bit of Nuln Oil or Agrax Eartshade to the more detailed areas on the models (like the chest Aquilas, or the Missile Launcher guy's left arm) would already make a substantial difference. They could also do the opposite, and try to highlight the raised areas, or they could go for a combination of both shading and highlighting.

I'm digging the fact that their bases match with the terrain, but it too could use a little bit more detail. I'd take the Salamanders' Multi-Melta guy as a reference; the two kinds of sand work really well with those tufts of static grass. A bit of drybrushing would also look nice on the sand, I think.

They could also work a bit on their brush control, but that's something that'll come with more practice

Looks fairly good, the armor could use some edge highlights. The biggest distraction for me is the random base sizes within the squad, surely you can afford bases if you can afford 40k.

Thanx everyone. I agree on the wash and/or edge highlighting. They are still working on getting steady hands (especially my youngest), so edge highlighting is still tough for them.

On base sizes: I intentionally model "special" models on 32mms, while bolter Marines get to stay on 25mms. I do this for 3 reasons:
1) I started collecting Marines just before 32mms existed
2) I use some Marines as chess pieces for another project and 25mm are easy to identify as Pawns
3) I personally like the look on only Heavy Weapons, some Sgts and Assault Marines being on 32mms, while Bolters and bolter-sized weapon models remain on 25mms

They look great.
I can't really say more than that because they're both better than me ... at the moment ... @Galef's sons! Your time will come!

Hot damn, those aquillas look better than mine! Have they considered putting the Salamanders on lava bases?

He did, yes. After putting his first batch on just the sand. I asked if he wanted me to scrap off the sand and do them all in lava, but he shrugged and said "Nah, too late now"
So here we are.

...

Goddammit, Lleyton and Nathan! Stop outdoing me!

I think they've done great work here. Nothing particularly crazy in terms of modelling or painting, just standard schemes on standard models, but very well executed!

Those are pretty well done! How old are your sons, if you don't mind me asking? They've got some serious talent that you should absolutely nurture as much as you can!

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000

LOL! I'm soon to be 34 and my sons are 14 & 12.

I really appreciate all the positive feedback from everyone! I've shared it with my boys and it seems to have really gotten them pumped.
I'm waiting on a set of Dark Imperium Marines to arrive as their next project.

Lleyton will be adding the Gravis Capt, 5 Intercessors & the Hellblaster to his UMs
Nathan will be adding 5 Intercessors & the Inceptors to his Salamanders. He's also just finished a Jump pack Capt w/ Combi-melta & Relic blade.
So far he's killed my Daemon Prince twice, so he's named him "Baron von Daemonslayer"

Adding my UM Razorback and Salamanders Landspeeder to their lists and they'll both have decent sized armies.
Combined, they'll have more than I have CSMs to match them. I'll have to break out the Eldar soon!
