Hey everybody, I'm just getting into 30k and working on an Iron Hands list. The plan is for Autek to be in the Spartan with the Gorgons and Orth in the Stormblade, supported by the predator squad. the 2 20-man marine squads will each have an apothecary and footslog to objectives. The Spartan will be outflanking with the predators, and rhino. This is the first list I've put together for 30k, so any and all advice would be appreciated.

I can't comment on the irin hand specific units, but on a general level I would drop a few upgrades. For example the multimelter on the spartan (it wants to move), and the ceramite on the deredeo and predators (if your opponent is in melta range, he will most likely also be able to get into sidearcs or assault in which case both units are dead/locked). With the freed points I would then upgrade your tactical squads. Give them at the very least melta bombs, to give them a chance against dreads etc. Personally I'm also a fan of giving them close combat weapons to double their attacks if they are charged.

Here's my US$0.02

Objectives:
Only four units that can hold objectives, and realistically, only three as the Spartan and Gorgans are your hard hitters. Out of those three, only one has any kind of mobility for taking distant objectives, and they are in a Rhino that is very easy to pop.

Firepower:
Overall, not bad. You have a good mix of long range, medium range, and short range firepower. One area you are really lacking is in anti-air. If that's a thing in your meta, then you might want to drop a Predator for some kind of AA. One of the cool things about Iron Hands is the ability to take Graviton weapons which are way more effective vs. Ceramite armored vehicles, and it's cheaper then all the melta's and multimeltas you have. I'd say break up one of the 20 model infantry squads into two 10 model squads, make one of them a Legion Tactical Support Squad, give 'em a Rhino and all Graviton weapons.

Vehicles:
Spartan, Rhino, Deredeo, three Predators, and a Baneblade. Pretty good if you ask me, but you might want to break up one of the Infantry squads to two 10xmodel squads and give them Rhinos for maneuverability. The outflank ability with infantry squads in a Rhino is very powerful. I play against an Alpha Legion player a lot and his entire army is mounted up and he loves to outflank.

Close Combat:
OK, here is probably your biggest weakness. Your "Deathstar" is anything but. The Gorgan squad is an interesting terminator squad. but they have power axes. Which will carve up MSU, but another Terminator unit will just shrug it off. Or any of the specialized close combat units. You should try and get at least a P-fist in there, or at least a Chain Fist just so you have some kind of anti-tank capability in melee. Giving one of them a heavy flammer is also a fantastic idea. The Sergeants in the tactical squads- I like to at least give them a combi-weapon or power fist or melta bombs for those rare times when some big thing manages to get into my backfield.

Terminators: Give them a heavy flammer and at least a chain fist.

Apothecaries: All that extra stuff for two models that are basically just gonna camp objectives and give your two infantry squads FNP is a waste. You'll never voluntarily want to assign a wound to these guys, even with a 2+, because if you lose it, you lose all your FNP. So Artificer Armor might not be a good choice. The Cyber-familiar pretty much does nothing for these guys because, again, you'll never want to assign wounds to these guys. They are not tanks. The Augury scanners... meh, because the shots you will be making are with bolters, and bolters even with the Interceptor rule won't do much of anything against any vehicle. But if your metta has a lot of Deepstrike... I'd say you could safely remove the scanners.

Tactical Squads: The Nuncio is useless for you because you have no deepstrike. You need Legion Vexcilla; you need to be able to reroll failed morale checks. Remember, you do not have ATSKNF in 30K. Thanks to your RoW, you do have stubborn in your deployment zone, but these guys probably won't be staying there. As noted above, give the Sergeants either a P-fist, combi-weapon, or Meltabombs. Just in case. Break up one of the big squads into two 10 model squads, make one of them a Legion Support Squad with all Graviton, and a Rhino. They will be your #1 anti-vehicle unit.

Deredeo: I love my Spicy Nacho Hot Dorito! Though it feels like I'm fishing for crits with the Arachnus.

Predators: Think you would be OK without the multi-melta's on these guys. They are long range tanks with the Predator Cannons. They are fantastic at popping light armor, but not so good at mainline tanks. Squadrons of tanks suck. They must maintain coherency of 4", All the tanks have to shoot at the same target, when they get hit, you do one hit at a time until a tank is destroyed, then you move on to the next tank, and the next, and the next. Two tanks in a squad is borderline, three? No way. Just too hard to move, stay in coherency, and all the tanks have to shoot at the same unit? Bleh. Break these guys up! Two Preds with the Pred Cannons, and the Plsama one by itself.

Stormblade: Have you looked at the Fellblades? They are cheaper, and give you more bang for the buck if you ask me.
Every list I make has to answer three basic questions:
1. How will I handle a Spartan?
2. How will I handle a Primarch Deathstar?
3. How will I handle flyers?

These are the three things you will see the most often in 30K, and you have to have an answer. That answer can be "I will avoid the Primarch/Deathstar at all costs" or "I will tarpit them with a Tactical Squad" (BTW, that's why I always have a P-fist on my sgts). The one answer that isn't acceptable is "I hope my opponent doesn't have one".

Final Thoughts: Rule of Cool > All, have fun, and welcome to 30K!

Did some tweaking. I'm not super concerned about a large amount of AA. My local meta doesn't use many flyers. I'm almost tempted to do an Angel's Wrath Salamanders list because of that.

Wow, I think you took everyone of my suggestions!

This list looks a lot better, and more of a general, all comers list. I think it will perform well, or give you a framework from which to build from in future battles.

Good luck!
