Old enough to remember the 60s (though I was just a little tyke)
I live in the Mountains of Northern California - so its solo or games with my kids (only 17 year old left)

Started with miniatures in the middle 80s while in college - Napoleonics (Empire III)
Got away from that and branched into Ancients & Renaissance with Warhammer Historical in the mid 90s
Still have lots of historical stuff

When my kids got old enough around 2000 I started doing Warhammer Fantasy (6th Ed I think)
I now do 8th ed. although we include Dogs of War.
My son does Chaos Warriors
I like to try different things, so I play: Norsca, Kislev, Empire (all easy proxies with my historical stuff) and occasionally High or Wood Elves
