I posted this on reddit and got a pretty good response thread. I know many of you enjoy obscure rule interactions so I figured I would post here as well.

Basically:

If a unit of fulgurites kills something in the fight phase, and then the 'dead' unit uses a strategem to fight after dying, would the fulgurites gain thier 3++ before the counterattack? The way I see it there are three possibilities:

* Because the strategem can not be used until after the unit is destroyed, by definition the unit has already been destroyed, resulting in the fulgurites gaining thier buff.

* The actions happen simultaneously, meaning that the order of interactions would be determined by whose turn it is.

* The strategem allows the unit to fight before dying, therefor the fulgurites do not gain the buff.

This came up in a game I played yesterday when I charged fulgurites into a Shield Captain. We decided that the buff and the stratagem happened simultaneously (and because it was my turn they gained the 3++), however it looks like that based on the wording of the Custodes Stratagem 'Only in Death,' that the decision may have gone against me in a tournament.

Thoughts?

Depends how the start is worded exactly.

Which one are you looking at?

I dont know the exact wording of the rules, but normally your opponent can only play OIDDE when his unit has been killed. Thus, your unit gets its 3++.

I don't think it has a clear answer. It would be very nuanced based on the wording of the rule. Hence why I think it is an interesting rule interaction. At a club level, I think resolving the rules simultaneously probably hits closest to RAI.

Basically it boils down to one question:

Is the unit "wiped out" before or after they are removed from the battlefield?

If after, then the Fulgurite Priests would not get the 3++

If before then the Fulgurite Priests would get the 3++

I would say yes they get a 3++ but that is my interpretation
