Looking for another army to work on, and can't pin it down. I've currently got a GSC and a Deathguard army. I've painted dozens and dozens of GSC over the past years, so i want something to work on for a break from that, something that isn't horde. I just can't settle on what direction to go. I also like armies that get up in your face, or at least do their shooting from mid field, i get bored to tears with armies that all sit in one block at the very back corner edge of the board, I had an ad mech army that did that and sold it.
Your suggestions would be really helpful. Thank you.

- Not a horde
- Not a castle in the back corner of the map army

Knights + Airbourne Scions.

Could be cool. Take 2 Knights Gallant + an Armiger for your Knights detachment, and a bunch of Scions in Valkyries for your Battalion. Could be fun. No idea if it would be competitive though.

How about Deamons? they can get up in your face, can avoid being hoard easily, and would work as allies for your death guard as well.

Hrm, second suggestion for deamons, and those could be be interesting to work on with my airbrush that i don't get to use enough. That sounds promising.

It’s elite, doesn’t work as a horde, and doesn’t castle like Space Marines.

Another idea is a Primaris Marines army of some sort, this is assuming you bought dark imperium and have some spare marines kicking around already, Space Wolves or blood angels could be a nice "in your face" army. but I think it might suffer from being not being differant eneugh from plague marines from a painting POV

I'd go for daemons, but they really work best as a quasi-horde, their troops and characters are the best things in their codex.
Daemons could tie into your death guard too.

You could wait for Sisters?

If you have an airbrush then Harlequins would be a good challenge for you. Definitely not a Horde, and absolutely not a sit-in-a-corner army. Also not super common either and very skill dependent.

If you want something that just is a real treat to paint and gives you loooots of hours of painting enjoyment for both the relatively low price and the points, while not being a total horde, I'd suggest Drukhari. They are dynamic as you said you wanted and have a very solid range of sculpts.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

Drukhari. The army has a lot of flexibility, Ynnari gives you a soup option later for variety but the army itself can lend itself to a variety of playstyles. The models still look great as well as being cheap

I would suggest craftworlds. They have short range guns on your basic troops, dragons and wraithguard along with some combat. Also if you are bored of doing the same paint style over and over you can get different aspect warriors for different paint schemes.

Sounds like you need Custodes in your life?

Please note, for those of you who play Chaos Daemons as a faction the term "Daemon" is potentially offensive. Instead, please play codex "Chaos: Mortally Challenged". Thank you.

Necrons. Mid-ranged shooting with good AP as well as a lot of strong CC units. And in 8th they're not that similar to Death Guard anymore, which is good.

Definitely custodes sound perfect for you-all absolutely not a hoard, can expand into other imperials if you get bored/want a new army and their new FW stuff is awesome.
Very good to airbrush too, pretty easy.

Or eldar of any stripe- fast, furious, and delicate. Very fun. Very very competitive also.

I second this. I recently proxied 9 Carnifex and old one eye list against a friends knight (pure, not a guardsmen in sight) list and it was hilarious and Im currently in the process of sourcing another 4 carnifexs and painting up my current ones to run it properly!

Necrons sounds like your jam to me. They aren't quite an assault army, more like an assault-band shooting army. They ride that bleeding edge where one wrong move gets you charged. You might enjoy that.

Play the one of the most fun IN YOUR FACE armies I've been playing have had a lot of fun with.

House Terryn Knights!

Ive been running

1x Valiant w/2 siegebreaker cannons
3x Knight Gallant
2x Armiger Helverin

You get a first turn charge potentially. The Helverins do provide some good distance shooting. and the Valiant wants to be up close and personal but also does not want to get stuck in CC. Also she eats hordes for breakfast lunch and dinner.

Plus the gallants do ALL THE DAMAGE.

I would have to be another who suggests Space Marines or Primaris, with all their chapters there has to be something that not only will fill your requirement tabletop tactics wise, but also thematically.

Perhaps Space Wolves, they seem to have a good balance between melee charges and shooting. Blood Angels seem to have a nice mix too, or even go as far as making your own chapter specifically for the purpose you're aiming for?

Not played tabletop for many years so, not sure if that is a thing or if it would be too difficult. Good luck!
