#1 Warhammer 40k, #2 age of sigmar, #3 DnD miniatures, #4 xwing, #5 star wars legion. No warmachine, I'm kind of surprised by that.

I don't think it's right to have DND minis in the ranking as it's not a wargame like the others -- just something to use for the RPG.

Kinda not surprised there's no Warmachine. It's been slipping in sales a lot over the last year.

I am a bit surprised that the WizKids stuff is on there, though, since it doesn't really have a dedicated game, but I guess that shows the sales of those miniatures is pretty darn high.

The Star Wars stuff isn't too surprising simply because of the IP. Big jump for AOS, though.

Not a huge surprise all around. AoS got a big jump alongside a popular launch of the new edition well timed to come after some attention grabbing new armies that give the game a better identity than "used to be fantasy". 40k's obvious. The WizKids stuff is SUPER popular. If your table top experience is mostly wargaming they don't seem like much of a draw, but DND 5th has been huge and the model line has filled a demand that's been clamoring for this kind of stuff for years. Star Wars is Star Wars. X-Wing is actually just back on the chart after not being there in the Spring with this mostly showing that people tried the relaunch. Legion is probably the bigger surprise, but its worth remembering this is when they released Han and Chewie and Palp and Fett. I'll be curious to see where both are in the spring, but you can never discount the raw power of the brand.

I'd be curious to see Warmachine's actual numbers as opposed to its ranking to see what's really going on. 40k and DnD were already beating it out in the spring, so its really that AoS and X-Wing's relaunches overtook it and Legion is outselling it as well. That last one if the real surprise and where I'm curious to see if the change is a result of Legion's growth or Warmachine's decline.

The secondhand market is flooded with warmachine stuff 70% off or more. It's not too surprising it's not selling. I've considered throwing a lot of my stuff in the garbage to make room since it's not worth my time to try to sell.

Legion kind of surprised me for being so high.

Edit: Does this mean all the local stores will stop carrying Warmachine now? It all ready feels like stores only carry the things on this list.

I don't think this list is the cause of what stores carry or don't carry, but instead shows what is actually selling, thus what stores are likely to keep ordering. Locally I have definitely seen a drop in Warmachine/Hordes stuff, but haven't seen a big jump necessarily in the other lines. I am seeing more Batman and Song of Ice & Fire, though.

Could be used as a measuring stick for new stores though.

Main issue is, the Top 5 don’t show the relative positions in terms of sales gaps.

One of the big oddities about it is it doesn't really show the size of the overall industry and any growth in that realm. We collectively have a bad habit of seeing different games as a zero sum game. Finite players for games to steal from one another. Things like DnD and X-Wing don't climb the rankings by taking players from the existing set. They generate new players entirely in numbers that dwarf even the most popular things in a niche hobby.

True that.

Certainly more control over their recruitment has seen GW through rougher patches. Other companies are more reliant of sympathetic store owners to not just stock, but promote the games. And a lack of promotion is a damned difficult situation.

There’s also the perspective that someone only plays one system. Now that is of course the case for quite a few gamers. Time and budgetary constraints are very much a thing. But it’s not universal.

That’s a feather in X-Wing’s cap. Whilst as a hobby it gets quite pricey, each purchase is essentially self contained, making it of obvious appeal as a second system, as opposed to 40k and Warmahordes. Akin to the Wii of the wargaming world, if you will.

I saw the same chart and wondered the same...But I know I have seen on trade sites and locally that a number of
X-wing players never went to the new edition or down sized their collections.

The other thing was the big slug of conversion stuff, then a gap, now they are starting to get back to regular releases.
All of this can make the numbers go down, but there still seems to be a strong number of players still playing locally
with most with a very few purchases since the change over and only patch working their missing pieces.

I don't feel x-wing is dying.. just a slow down until they release something exciting.

This is the first report where they don't really report any numbers. For a long time they reported overall growth numbers and industry sales size. A couple years ago they started breaking it down by segment. This is the first report where all the details are hidden behind a paywall. The only real comment you can take away in some of the other article is non-collectable miniatures was the fastest growing segment and mostly thanks to GW.

https://icv2.com/articles/news/view/42627/a-decade-growth-2018

But the numbers are really just a rough estimate. They never clarified what is included in their estimates. If it is just independent store? does it include online sales? Does it include direct sales? The best you could take away from this overall health of a game.
