I know this technically isn’t AoS related given that the book is set in the ‘world that was’ but didn’t think the WHFb legacy forum was the right place (mods please feel free to move as appropriate).

I’m currently about half way through reading ‘Nagash the Sorceror’ by Mike Lee and just had a quick question.

Throughout the book, Arkhan the Black and some of Nagash’s other lieutenants are referred to as ‘immortals’. Are they vampires?

There are references to them being unable to stand in sunlight (whether this is just painful or would result in their destruction isn’t yet clear to me) and wrapping themselves up to leave only faces and hands uncovered. But they all depend on Nagash’s elixir rather than the drinking of human blood.

I’m assuming they are not vampires given that (at least in the fluff I remember) Arkhan was killed by a spear thrown by a common soldier then resurrected as the Liche King.

For that matter, how does one become a liche?

The elixir that Nagash had the first few immortals drink was a much more pure creation than the one that Neferata concocted later. The first group along with Arkhan were addicted to the Elixir, rather than the lifeblood of mortals. Maybe some sort of proto-vampire.

Spoilers for the book:

Spoiler:
As you get further into the book, the "immortals" title will be put to the test. I think a few will die in combat, with the rest being executed once Nagash is thought to have been defeated. The manner of their execution(beheaded and burnt to ash) is pretty much the same way you'd kill a vampire, I think. Arkhan cursed his foes as he was killed and no one touched his corpse to finish the job as extensively as the other "immortals" were dispatched.

I always assumed that because Arkhan's corpse was left in such a state and was resurrected in such a way, he became a Liche. Though he did suffer some more unique adversity in the later novels that may have turned him from some sort of proto-vampire into a Liche.

I liked that Time of Legend series. Now you have me wanting to get back into it!

It will become clearer as the novel/s progress however I will say that there are no vampires at this point in the Warhammer world.

Its a really good trilogy of novels and it will explain how the first vampires are created The Elixir makes them more dependant on the creator of the elixir - Nagash is always a control freak.
