Are track guards one of those "you must take" this kind of upgrades? I'm designing a Tallarn tank force and at 10 points a pop, it will mean the difference between me getting an extra Leman Russ.

I like them on chimera. Double flamers, a storm bolster and track guards is 100pts exactly which pleases me, and are fun to field en masse (if not the most effective option)
