Yo! Finland's been bitten by nostalgia bugs and great many people are now looking back to older editions of Warhammer. We just had a 2-day soft tournament played by 6th edition rules and Ravening Hordes lists and it was all too much fun. The next one is already being planned and everybody's trying get more games in-between. I've been playing with greenskins for the last couple of years now and after last weekend I felt like I needed some fresh wind. I'm still very much an infantry man and would like to not buy any new minis, so naturally I came back to my old love, the Dwarfs. I tried to build a list that's at the same time fluffy, cool, tactical and gentlemannish. So there's a rather heavy load of melee troops and only medium shooting, by which I aim to cripple the enemies' fast moving troops and flyers to force them to encage with even terms. I also have a gyrocopter and some ogres to harass, march block and put pressure on their movement phase. I think I'll have my first game with this list around next month, hopefully against some posh elgi, so I have plenty of time fix whatever problems you can point out.

Hmm... Are you intentionally playing without a cannon? If you were just lacking the points, you could take the shields and heavy armor off the quarellers, and remove the standard and musician from the Slayers which will most likely not need them, and switch a spear thrower for a cannon..

I'm glad you asked, as this is a thing I didn't clarify beforehand. I indeed am intentionally playing without a cannon, as I actually lack a metal mini for it, and because I find them rather boring hit-or-miss warmachines that either kill expensive things without effort or do nothing whatsoever while costing more than two bolt throwers. Also, bolt throwers can't misfire and need two charges to destroy.

Also I think giving crossbowmen heavy armour and shields actually makes them very viable as a small combat unit! They have a 3+ as and T4, so they can't be destroyed by anything smaller than a proper combat unit and can take on thinned blocks later in the game.

Cool to see 6th getting some attention! Over here, it is played a lot too.

List seems solid. I really like giving shooting units armour + shield, it is very handy.
But perhaps the list a bit too solid as I think there many units with heavy amour/shield, and maybe using something with a bit higher strength could be useful against heavy armoured foes (like many calvalry). Such as using Hammerers instead of Ironbreakers or something. The Lord and Thane do bring damage (as well as ogres/BT) but could appear a bit fragile against other fighty characters. It's just an idea to have more flexibility.

Glad to hear the good old times are alive. I actually am more of a 7th edition fan rule-wise, yet I love the Ravening Hordes lists more than Armybooks.

Interesting point and I was thinking actually about adding some miners. But I fear there's not enough shooting to protect those fragile great weapons . I also think heavy armour + shield is a better protection from cavalry, as it makes attacking less likely to cause wounds. Static res is what I count on more than rolling wounds.

The best advice is to take it out for a spin against an opponent. You're Core light for my tastes, and character heavy, but it's still a viable list.

Knowing what other models you have may help us make better suggestions, though.

You think I should swap the cheapest thane for some more bodies? Should the crossbowmen units be a wee bit bigger?

I think I've plenty of models for most options, except for both flame and basic cannon and hammerers. Also I only got one Gyrocopter.

I tend to run ballistic troops bare bones, so I'd have taken either the Lord or the Thane along with the extra trimmings off those Crossbowmen and dropped a 20 man Warrior block with Hand Weapon/Shield and full command. That's just me, though. I have a sickness...

I also have no interest in ever running Slayers, so not sure how valid my opinion is on all things Dwarf.
