So I bought an as186 air compressor on ebay and theres an obvious leak on the pipe leading from the compressor to the tank. Here's an image of where: https://www.dropbox.com/s/7vxqlqd30lxvrcq/IMG_20190805_183642.jpg?dl=0

It seems to be coming from the top of the thread on the compressor side.

I've contacted the seller but in the meantime is this as simple as tightening everything up or can that risk further damage? I just want to avoid sending it back and waiting on a new one.

You can certainly loosen the fitting and re-apply some teflon tape - once you tighten it back down there should not be any air leaking. It could have been an inadvertent mistake when assembling.

Cheap air-compressor from ebay has problems? I am shocked.

Umm.. where to start......

The pipe to the tank is too short so they... WTF? Cross threaded the nipple? Hammered it in at that angle?

... god only knows what chinesium hammer job that was. Yeah. I can see why it's leaking. Take it apart and check to see if you can even thread that thing in or what's been done to it.

While pretty much all the small tank compressors out there come from the same Chinese Factory.. there are grades of product. I bought one that was gone over and assembled in Germany. Paid that extra not out of spec tax. But the fit and finish are great, it doesn't leak (holds air for days after the thing is turned off and builds pressure fast and is more quiet than my previous Harbor Freight Compressors which all burned up.

I do not know but be careful. Find a shop that works on them is my advice or learn what exactly is needed to repair it. Either way it could save you a lot of pain.
