I was thinking about making a custom guard regiment but I was wondering if they are planet specific or not.

I kinda want them to follow around my armies during campaigns and such planet to planet. Or just as random "npc" type guys for missions where they wouldn't be too out of place fighting in wasteland and then on a hive world.

Thanks

IG gets deployed wherever they are told, for example the Ciaphas Cain series starts out with Valhallans(ice world specialists) deployed to a desert planet. IG's best trait is that they are adaptable to their deployment destination.

On the cold side on a tidal-locked planet. They are not THAT adaptable. They would fight even when deployed on the hot side, yet they would require hot-weather gear and their fighting capability would be hindered.

Usually the munitorum uses the specialities of the regiments as a strength, but it is not unheard of regiments being deployed really badly like in toxic environment without rebreather. So usually they are suited to the world (like the Tallarns on Taros) but not necessarily, especially if it's a big big war needing more and more men.

My personal IG are based on Tallarns. I use Cadian and Catachan models too, but painted in desert camouflage uniforms to represent a mixed force in a hot arid environment

It's not at all unheard of for Guard regiments to be attached to other Imperial forces for extended periods of time. If you're consistently running Guard alongside other armies there's no reason you can't fluff them out as being near-permanent auxiliaries.

Nor is it unheard of for IG regiments to replace losses by absorbing the remains of other regiments, being merged together or recruiting from the PDF from the worlds they are fighting over.

After enough time, there might not be that many Cadians left in a Cadian regiment - despite it being at full strength and still in possession of it's colours. Though presumably the new recruits would have been trained in the Cadian style, or as close as you can get with 'late bloomers'.

Some regiments are created from the remnants of other regiments that are no longer large enough to justify continued existence.

So if the 101st Cadian and the 266th Valhallan were reduced in number on planet Johnsonia, they could be reformed into the 1st Johnsonian Regiment.

Those regiments that are shipped off world will not likely be replenished. The Vostroyans are an example of an exception to these.
Because they are not replenished they often merge into others or are lost entirely with time and losses.

There are exceptions where in particularly long wars the guardsmen and women might replenish their own stock through natural means (families are sometimes taken and you might get in with a the local populace) over generations or conscripting from the local population.

Remember that most guardsmen are shipped offworld to fight - often only those in active warzones remain on their homeworld. Guardsmen work for the astra militarum and imperium directly (through a looooong chain of command). The local forces are PDF or planetary defence forces and are subject to the planetary or system governors. Guardsmen are one of the many tithes that the imperium places upon its worlds.

In the Gaunts Ghosts series was said that the families and companions stay aboard the ship in the orbit while the soldiers get deployed. Some soldiers even had wives and children IIRC.

That was after Tannith had been lost, so might be a special case when raising a regiment and evacuating a planet becomes one and the same thing.
But certainly might be the case for some Cadian regiments now.
