Hi all,
Sorry if this has been asked before.
Got the latest SM codex. Been thinking for a while now of doing some company vets, company champ and ancient on bikes.
The codex doesn't have them in it but the index does.
Therefore, can I still take them?

Sure can. However, bear in mind that certain tournaments may disallow Index choices.

That depends entirely upon your opponent, or the rules of the tournament you're attending. Automatically Appended Next Post: That depends entirely upon your opponent, or the rules of the tournament you're attending.

The Codex does have Company Champion & Company Veterans - page 127.

Indexes are still legal atm, as is the FAQ Flowchart.
However, with CA19 the "Legends" format is most likely to release.
To be frank, you should pretend the indexes don't exist because it'll cause issues in the future.

I agree with BCB in this one. Not much point in building and painting a bunch of stuff you may not be able to use. Just a recipe for saltiness. I moved away from Index as soon as the Ork Codex dropped, because it was plain to me that anything that didn't carry over likely wasn't going to be supported for much longer.

Right now you can still use indexes. What issues may arise in the future is irrelevant for now. Its best to ignore any advice that tells you to pretend indexes dont exist.

Only if you don't consider your finances and time relevant. Buying, building, and painting a bunch of models only to be told that they're no longer legal to use in the most common play type around... well, maybe that's fine with you, but it'd certainly upset me.
That said, you do you, OP. You wanna run some Index units, then go for it. I just wanted to weigh in with my opinion on it before you spent a lot of time and money on putting this army together.

It is absolutely right and proper to make the OP aware of what evidence exists for the potential future of kits, even if we don't have full confirmation from GW. That way they can make their own decision based on it.
Just because we don't know for sure what will happen doesn't change that, and to say otherwise is nonsense.

No one knows when GW decides to remove index units. If i remember correctly legends will no longer be recommended by GW.

This is true. However, as I believe most (if not all) Index options will attain Legend status, and the general way the 40k community takes GW recommendations as rules, it's probably best to assume that when Legends is released (sometime around December) you won't be able to find many games that will still allow them.

Legends will be totally usable. Models with rules can be used. If your group is unfun enough to pretend every game is a tournament and thus house rule to not use them, get some new friends haha!

While I agree, I also recognize the reality of the game. That being: GW recommendations (such as rule of 3) are pretty much used by all gaming groups, even for friendly games. So, in the "real world" what is a "rule" and what is actually done are often at odds (like the rules not actually allowing you to fire Assault weapons after Advancing, for example). You could take a hard stand on this, but the most likely outcome is that you just won't find any gaming partners.

You can for 2 more weeks, after that the Indexes are replaced by Legends and the models won't be usable in normal Matched and Narrative play. If you only play Open with your immediate family members, then you're probably good to use Legends.

Hah. Pleeease don’t equate being a RAW-blinkered numpty going against consensus and common sense with using models that have official GW-written rules between friends. Very different. One is stupid and breaks the game needlessly, and no one plays that way. One isn’t insurmountable, breaks nothing and just requires a conversation. Remember Open can mean “all Matched and Organised Play rules but allowing Legends” of two players wish.
In a pickup game sure, expect Matched Play wannabe tourney 2K meta WAAC. Outside of that make some friends, have some fun, play your cool old models. Not everything is cutthroat pretend tournament time. If that’s people’s only experience that’s kinda sad. :-/ But as you say, if that’s your only crowd that’s your only option. I certainly wouldn’t invest in Legends/Index stuff. But if you have it and others actively prevent you using it despite it likely gimping you’re list in the process, they could do with reappraising their priorities.
I’m just awaiting the salt if they bin off Leviathans to Legends. Eeesh.

This is very wrong.
https://www.warhammer-community.com/2019/08/29/breaking-news-sisters-psykers-and-skeletonsgw-homepage-post-4/
Every year, we review all of the points values (for all of the units) in Warhammer 40,000. We won’t be doing this for the Warhammer Legends, though. Once we’ve assigned them their final points, they won’t be part of that ongoing balance review – and we won’t be recommending Legends units for competitive tournaments.
