So, like the poll here on Dakka, the inner was indeed Abaddon.

I really hope that Mephiston ranked high too so that GW can get the solid message from their fanbase that we want these old classic characters reimagined and redone, and not just adding new models all the time.

Eh GW most likely doesn't really care about the facebook poll results as much as they do the models actual sales data which GW has. A model can be really popular visually, but still sell really badly. Similarly a model might not have ranked as high in the "best of the year" aware, but at the same time it might have outsold many other higher ranks.

If anything the facebook poll should have some casual mirror to the models sales data, since people are more likely to vote for models they want to or actually do own.

I imagine it would be hard to go just by sales data. Sales will be influenced by rules, whether good or bad, and also by repeated purchases of the same model.

The polls on the likes of Facebook can be a good metric for customer feedback in terms of aesthetic, detail, and design.

It'll probably influence the design team more so than the strategic team.

The poll wasn't actually done via Facebook alone. They had a surveymonkey bit that was in the initial article.

yeah given the model releases in the last year or so GW's updated a LOT of old minis.

Of the top of my head old minis that got a face lift this year:

Calgar, Abaddon, Chaos Space Marines, Chaos Havocs, Obliterators, Tiggy, Shrike, Korsarro Khan, Howling Banshees and more.

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two

Wow, the creative and unusual and the classic and nostalgic seem to have been the big winners this year, who coulda guessed?

Primaris "Endless variation on a tune we've all heard so much we know it by heart" wasn't winning many people over? Big shocker!

units proably out sell big special characters. All this really suggests to me is that people buy lot's of units but the big centerpeice characters really are what capture the eye and the imagination

A lot of paint only hobbyists probably buy a lot more characters than units though. Though I don't doubt that you're still right about units being the biggest sellers.

Some of that list makes me sad.
On the other hand, a surprisingly high amount of love for chaos and gobbos, despite the 'rules difficulties' for the former.

I find it intreasting that pretty much all the winners have been chaos. this suggests that, at the very least chaos models are among the fsvorites of fans for apperance.

I'm perfectly aware of that.

But it seems naive to pretend that rules don't affect how people vote.
And conversely, that the popularity and potential sales don't influence GW to make the rules better.

Well, seems clear to me that it didn't

The only one that surprises me is Katakros and his retinue.

I voted for the Keeper of Secrets for the record.

I'm surprised Katakros is as high as he is, but I'm not surprised its in the top 10. That said I do think that when you compare his pose and retinue to the Sisters of Battle similar model the SoB blows Katakros out of the water as a wargaming model.

Katakros has a very static pose for the whole model. There's even a model bringing information to him. For a model and retinue that is going to move over the battlefield its a somewhat odd choice; but we've seen it before (the tactician model for Genestealer Cults). The Sisters of Battle is a fully mobile retinue system. I think for a wargame that just works so much better as a visual depiction; even if you don't like the scenery itself, the whole model is on the move - its going through the battle.

Katakross is just posing, it would work great if his model was like a terrain feature or if he, as a model, didn't have any real reason to need to move - or if the game's scale was very different (say 6mm or 15mm) so you could envision the general having a command tent where he operated from and issued orders rather than 35mm where (even in the Old World fantasy game) everything is very much on the move.

I think its also important to realise that Chaos has had a pretty big year for both games in terms of new models. 40K got a lot of new stuff and AoS has had a really good covering too. Plus the way Chaos works there's a lot of cross-over. A Slaves to Darkness player is also going to likely collect things like Greater Demons from all four of the Demon armies.

In addition Chaos bleeds over both games for many of the demonic models.

I think this all helps to add to the pool of people who are more likely to favour Chaos models and to thus vote for them. Not that everyone only votes for the models they buy, but it is most likely a factor that if you collect an army you're more likely to really like the aesthetics of that army and also own/see those models and thus be more likely to vote for them over models for armies you might pay all that much attention too.

Sorry I'm not refering to the ten unit list, but rather
I'm looking at the winners over the past few years,

2016 was Magnus, 2017 was Morty, 2018 was the noise Marine and 2019 was, of course Abaddon
