Hello,

So I've recently been trying to make my own custom wash colours when I discovered the legendary Les wash mix on this site. After reading all the hype around it I immediately got onto ebay and spent a fair chunk of money buying matte medium, flow aid and ink (I have deionised water already).

I followed the guide, 10:1 water:flow aid + equal part matte medium + ink = god tier wash, right?

Well, the end result was disappointing to say the least. I've found that at first, the wash goes on really well, pools in recesses and darkens the areas needed. However by the time it has dried, the wash appears to have dropped to the bottom of the model, the feet will have a puddle of colour around it, the pooling is gone and the whole model ends up almost uniformly stained with the colour of my choice. I'll try and get a model for an example and take photos of each stage tomorrow.

Does anyone know what it is I have done wrong, here? Everyone raves about this wash and how well it works and looks but so far my experience with it is sub par.

Alternatively, if there are newer and better mixes, I'd be happy to hear them.

Thanks

Sounds like it just may be too thinned out with water and the medium does not have time to dry before it runs down your model. I have had this happen with some custom mixed washes, too. While I did not remix to solve, I just made sure to lay the mini flat front, then back until mostly dry, so the wash stays put. If you stand it up while wet, it all will run down.

Try another batch, but reduce your water by 25% and add a bit more matte medium.

Honestly, if you want to use non wash washes, just buy oil paints.
