Expanding my IG force, and I thought I'd put this out to the Dakka community. I want to take a squad of Roughriders, most with lances and laspistols. However, I'd like a few (2-3) to exchange their laspistols for shotguns (becuase it fits with my IG fluff).

However, does this violate weapon restrictions? I know that shotguns are 2-handed, but what is a lance? 1-handed or 2-handed (personally, I think it's a 1-handed weapon)??

There is no 1 or 2 handed restriction for non-character models.

Just model the things on there, and play them as lasguns/pistols. Problem solved.

Although the RR entry does specify that you can only give the weapon options to models without lances.

So you either take the whole unit with lances (as the entry specifies), which kills their ability to take the other weapon options, or you leave the whole unit with Laspistol/CC weapons, in which case you can upgrade their weapons to other things.

I don't believe the RR entry says that they MUST all have CCWS or Lances. If I remember correctly, it says that RRs are armed (initiatly) with Laspistols & CCWS (not counting special wpns), then

You can exchange all laspistols OR CCW for lances at +## (which would leave the RRs with EITHER a CCW/lance or laspistol/lance)

(Also) ANY model may exachange their laspistol OR CCW for at shotgun at no additional cost

Hence, if they all have LP/Lances, theoritically I could switch any # of the LPs for shotguns. I don't remember there being an rule about no weapons options if armed with a lance (proving once more that I should carry my codices with me wherever I go)

No. The codex states that any number of models without hunting lances may substitute a lasgun or shotgun for their laspistol.

So maybe I should just forget the lances? I guess there wouldn't be much difference in # and Str of attacks, right?

Lances are the only reason to take rough riders.

AncientSociety, in the MEQ heavy metagame we all know to be reality, the extra strength, initative, and above all, armor ignoring ability of the hunting lance are invaluable. Without the lance, the Rough Riders are a unit of IG with bigger bases and a longer charge. With Hunting Lances, they become some of the best counter assault in the game, and certainly the best IG will ever get.

"The last known instance of common sense happened at a GT. A player tried to use the 'common sense' argument vs. Mauleed to justify his turbo-boosted bikes getting a saving throw vs. Psycannons. The player's resulting psychic death scream erased common sense from the minds of 40k players everywhere. " - Ozymandias
