Good variety of basing supplies in general on that site, and plenty of flying stands. Shouldn't need to go to 2-3" thick - I've seen a few Thunderhawks on rods that are more liek 3/4 inches thick.

since you're in the US, Philly should have local plastics shops that would carry the rod you need.

A big box home-improvement type store might have a number of things that could do the trick: towel rods, curtain/blind batons, even PVC pipe all come in transparent or translucent varieties. At least, that's what a cursory search of the home depot site indicates. Might be able to get what you need for fairly cheap, given it's a one-time sort of purchase.

Any large city should have a plastics place in it somewhere that will have acrylic rod.

Many will have a minimum length you have to buy, but some may have "offcuts" that might do you.

Just bear in mind, that the taller the stand, the larger the base will have to be, just so that the model isn't top-heavy. A general rule of thumb is the base radius is not less than the height of the total model (vertical stand + model height). Because leverage DOES come into play.

Secret weapon miniatures does flight widget sets with 6" lengths of 3/4" acrylic rod that are solid enough to support a resin thunderhawk.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

Just buy a plexiglass board and cut it into the standard x pattern long ways and use that?
