Looking at making an Eldar kill team, I bought a box of guardians and was looking at ways to kitbash one or two of them into storm guardians and was wondering how others had gone about tackling the idea. I have mostly space marines, a box of the old necron warriors and immortals. Any ideas are welcome.

If you can get hold of some harlequin swords and pistols they work well. But honestly the gw bits aren’t too bad even though they are finecast.

You could also probably pick up the old metal versions in bits lots on ebay or similar. But yeah, the official storm guardian upgrades on GW aren't TOO expensive (though it's a bit galling to spend £25 on a unit of guardians then half that again just to be able to make that same unit slightly different).

My advice would be check through all the eldar joblots of bits on ebay and see if there's anything with storm guardian arms (metal being preferable). You can use other bits for swords easily enough - even fantasy swords work well, particularly if they're Elven - but it's very difficult to find anything pistol-wise that looks like a shuriken as they have a very distinctive shape.

A bit of advice about using aspect warrior close combat weapons, though. All the storm guardian bits have the pistol in the right hand and the sword in the left, whereas banshees or scorpions have them the other way round, so mixing and matching storm guardian weapons with aspect warrior weapons is more difficult. That said, if you're more lax about wysiwyg, there's no reason you can't have storm guardians with two swords or two pistols. One of the storm guardians in my Objective Secured entry last month had two pistols, one of which was taken from a finecast scorpion someone had hacked about.

Oh, and don't forget you'll be able to field fusion guns and flamers with the storm guardians (which is almost the main reason to take them). You can pick up those in all sorts of places. The old Rogue Trader guardian sprues had lots and the fusion guns in particular still look pretty much identical to the ones you get these days. You'll probably even be able to pick those up individually on ebay.
