I've lurked here for years and never have had anything to post, however after surviving the hurricane that just smashed my home town and coming back to find my house destroyed by wind and rain, sadly my guard was along with it. My model shelf was destroyed and I found bits of Cadians and tanks here and there across the yard and around the house but for the most part my force is demolished. The wife and kids and I are safe so that is something I'm grateful for. I guess the main purpose of this post is to see if you guys would suggest going back into guard in 9th edition or even going back into the hobby at all. I havent gotten the 9th ed rule book or played any 9th games yet and I know some players are unhappy with GW locally and are setting the game down at the moment.

Also considering it will be some time before I have extra finances to spare on frivolous things if anyone has guard models they would like to unload for el cheapo in the near future I would be interested.

Just as a caveat, The family and I are staying with relatives in Texas at the moment so we are safe and comfortable. We are currently looking at moving to some where near where we are staying seeing as how Lake Charles has been completely ruined and it will take years for it to recover to "normal". Just didn't want anyone thinking I was trying to rebuild my 40k army with my family in a dire situation. We have the essentials covered. I'm just kinda heart broken over my army being lost. 40k is my one thing I do for just myself, I don't hunt or fish or go to the bars I just build and paint my little men and play wargames on the weekends when there are no other family plans so I feel robbed of my one outlet at the moment and its a bit disheartening.

Some group of players is always setting the hobby down but a lot of them are back before too long.

If you want to get back in the hobby I'd say go for it. I'm hoping homeowners/renters insurance will help out that way if you do it.

If you get back in the hobby and love Guard go Guard. Play what you love. If you want to try something different, this would be a good excuse. If you're really looking for a silver lining.

My WHFB armies were Bretonians and Tomb Kings.

I'd check ebay, 9th edition is new, you might be able to find a good deal from the useal "THIS EDITION SUCKS MY ARMY IS RUINED" hyperbolic types etc

If you enjoy the hobby, jump back in as you can.
And your request for cheap models? That tells me your rejoining 40k. So just admit it.

On wether or not you should do Guard again in 9th?
While you can pick up the 9th ed rulebook, no one can tell you for certain what 9th will bring for the Guard in specific. Will they be great? Will they suck? Something in-between? New models?? Only way to find out for sure is when the new Codex actually arrives. The one thing that IS certain? Between now & then there will be rules errattas, pt changes, etc. So what you're seeing at the moment might be a bit inaccurate by the time the Codex lands. So if you do go Guard again? Start with the stuff that's highly unlikely to be physically changing - the tanks. And then the bare min. of stuff to put them on the field.

So others in your area are upset & shelving 40k for the moment, so what? As long as YOU still enjoy the hobby & there's others to play with....
Besides, if you do relocate? What the locals are doing 40k-wise in Lake Charles won't matter at all.

Nice to see you and your family alive and kicking.
I'd play Guard definitely in the 9th ed.

I wish you the best of luck. Sadly shipping fees to the US are completely bonkers right now, otherwise I'd get our DKOK guy to print you some soldiers to paint.

Keep in mind that guard has been a pretty consistent army across all editions, there rarely has been a time where a bunch of infantry men backed by tanks and powerful artillery didn't have the ability to impact the game.

That said, a clean slate is also a chance. Maybe have a look at other armies, maybe there is an army you always wanted to started but didn't because you already had guard?

heads up - my homeowner's insurance policy had a personal property allowance that specifically allocated up to 1000$ of coverage for "collectibles, models, memorabilia, and toys". If when filing your claim, you tally the value of your collection you might be able to get extra money to help you with getting back into some form of the hobby.

If that happened to me...man, I'd probably end up getting back in to some limited capacity, I have a lot of friends at the local place I play.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

Hey man,

I'm really sorry to hear about your property loss and I'm glad to hear that your family is okay.

I know some of what you're going through. I had collected GW stuff for about 11 years when Hurricane Katrina destroyed my home in New Orleans. I lost it all.

At first, i decided that i wouldn't get back in. I couldn't see spending the time again; i couldn't see spending the money again. My family temporarily relocated and I had to get a new job, so gaming wasn't really one of my priorities. But Christmas that year, my wife (at the time) bought me a paint set and a box of minis. She knew that deep down, the hobby brought me joy. It wasn't enough stuff to play games, but I had fun assembling and painting. Then I'd buy one more box (just one), assemble it, and paint it. Bit by bit I started to build an army. Friends would send me a unit or a vehicle. Local gamers donated some stuff, and within a year I was back to playing again. It's been 15 years since Katrina (almost to the day), and I have a sizable collection now.

I guess my point is, if the hobby brings you joy, don't abandon it. But with the way the world is right now, take your time to build and paint. Don't overspend (you'll probably need to spend plenty to rebuild your life), but mental health is important too. If your local group doesn't play for a while, hopefully you can still have fun with the hobby.

If you do decide to get back in, feel free to shoot me a DM. I don't check them often, but i could probably put together a care package from other 40k Katrina victims and mail it to you to help out.

My request for cheap models is due to having to replace most of the furniture and appliances in my house
and you make a good point about relocating

Ive considered grey knight to start over with because of the low model count i figured it'd be cheaper to start over at around 1000 points if i only needed like 20 or so models.

You make a good point and I was actually talking with my wife about doing just that. Maybe picking up one box of something and a few new brushes. Many of my paints were in a plastic tote that survived so I lucked out there. and just buying building and painting one box at a time till i have stuff put back together again.

If you want to start cheap again, honestly I'd reccomend space marines. with their new codex in october the basic space marine tac marine is going up to 2 wounds and will cost 18 PPM, so a marine army will inevitably be fairly small. and there's lots of boxed sets out so getting a demi-company of primaris marines is likely going to be very wallet friendly.

Yes, obviously.
You were also asking our advise as to wether to even get back into the game/hobby though. Why ask a question that you already know the answer to?

As a survivor of Katrina, I feel for your situation. I was lucky that I and my immediately family personally escaped the sort of destruction that has been inflicted on you, but I did have several family members who likewise lost their gaming collections and/or housing to the storm.

The good news is that things tend to surprisingly bounce back faster than you may expect, though they certainly won't be the same.

I wouldn't push to get back into the hobby, but it sounds like your still interested in it, so building back up a force seems like something you could work towards. Perhaps this is a chance to start smaller or try something new, if 9E doesn't excite you.

It never ends well

That and they're in almost all the starter/boxed sets that get parted out on Ebay allowing some cheaper pickups. The partial starter set boxed squad is going to usually be cheaper than a retail box.

if he could find a marine half of indomatus that's a solid 1000 point marine army right there

You might also try Guard in Kill Team first. It's not 40K, but it's a more minimal investment, and pretty much anything you buy will work later in a 40K environment.

If you enjoy Guard in Kill Team, then maybe build to a Combat Patrol size force. That way you can test the waters of 9th, without spending a ton of money at once.

Just don't try to go into 9th with a full size force unless that's precisely what you liked about 40K. If 2000 point armies clashing was your jam, you have to roll the dice and buy a lot of stuff not knowing whether you will like 9th or not.

Hopefully, you can 'slow grow' and have some enjoyment that way.

You know you can start by getting the 9e rules & giving it a read.
Any experienced gamer will be able to form a pretty decent opinion on wether or not 9th will suit them just by doing that.
After that it's just waiting for the your specific Codex to arrive & seeing how that affects the opinion.

I've read over the rules and watched a few battle reports, the game seems to be in favor of shooting armies in this edition so I'm fairly certain the guard will do well. I think I'm going to go with guard again but I may go krieg like I've always wanted instead of Cadia. I'll start small as suggested.

Sounds like wargaming is an important part of your family's mental wellbeing.

It's hard when you get a set back like that. But you still seem to be enjoying playing so a small force and a place go out to play once a week (or however often you played) seem like the should be a priority. (Since you mentioned that you had basics covered)
