What tips would you guys give for taking on a mechanised list in 9th with Orks? Any top unit and tactical recommendations?

I played my first game of 40k in about 17 years yesterday; my new Bad Moon Orks vs. my friend's Astra Militarum Cadian mechanised army. 1,600pts. It was Retrieval Mission and my opponent won by 5 victory points; a close fight, with 80%+ casualties each side.

General observations and lessons from the game:

1. I wasn't aggressive enough straight away. By the end of the battle I had all but one primary objective, but he had got the first turn and rushed to loads at the start. I took too long then pushing him back.

2. I need more anti armour because of the semingly endless chimeras. I immediately bought 2 boxes of men gunz afterwards...

3. I took 6 x MANz in a battlewagon and then  took too long to charge - in future will take small squads and just smash them into where he has the most chimeras and chew through them.

4. Shokkjump dragster was the MVP, killing 2 chimeras and badly wounding a flyer too.

His army is basically lots of mechanised Guard infantry squads with special weapons,  plus some veterans and a couple of heavy weapons.

Thank you for any help!

It's better to look for answers in an ork thread.
In short, any ork concept could work. Hordes simply outscore and tie them down, chewing through not-so-tough chimeras even with regular sluggas and shootas, trukkboyz simply roll around and outscore, while buggy spam just wrecks ig tanks with their shooting but need to be well hidden to survive going 2d.

In general, it seems like you did a lot of things right, you probably need some more anti-tank shooting to go through his vehicles.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks do not think that purple makes them harder to see. They do think that camouflage does however, without knowing why.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe.

An important thing to note with the change of edition is that your vehicles can charge - this is really important for getting your MANs as far forward as possible. I failed for my first few games in 8th as I continued to have the old mentality that vehicles were only able to drive around in the movement phase.

Otherwise it sounds like you did well, and learnt from your game! Tankbustas are, as always, good anti-armour. Especially when you put "more stikkbomms" stratagem on them and 10 of them throw tankbusta bomms! happens rarely, but it's effective when it does!
