So while i was updating my contributions to the "what are you listening to now?" topic i decided to compile my top 26(thats just the number i came up with)

favorite anime theme (opening/ending/important) vocal songs

I specifically left out the instrumentals for this one as much as i love things like TANK from cowboy beebop and the orchestral opening for space battleship yamato(one of the most iconic themes in all of anime), that's another topic.

Some of these are very well known and some of the others you may find to be rather obscure since i have been collecting for over 30 years now.

As a lover of all things Gundam, I must add some of the best Gundam themes;

And one instrumental theme, because the music of Gundam IBO was amazing, maybe the best of the franchise.

Sawano Hiroyuki has chucked out quite a few tracks for the series of late (Gundam Narrative and Gundam Unicorn) that are pretty amazing.

EDIT: Though, that said, Unicorn is a theme that desperately needs more appreciation.

Code Geass Lelouch of the Resurrection was clearly intended originally to be a full series that got cut into a movie (and as a result the whole thing feels rushed and half-done), but damn it's ending theme is fan-freaking-tastic;

And now I'm just thinking of all the mecha anime I watch most of the time, so have some aLIEiz from Aldnoah.Zero;

Ooooh this is gonna be interesting.

You've both covered several of mine already so here are mine:

Fullmetal Alchemist, being my top anime for me, has the position partly because both the original and brotherhood had some real bangers, my top ones are:

Inuyasha was one of my first animes, so this has a lot of nostaglia factor:

I'm pretty sure everyone knows about Gurren Lagann and Kill La Kill

Can't forget about Jojo

Sakura War anime opening is solid, good callback for old fans while doing a new rendition

As far as more recent anime go, these have been pretty high up my list:

Well gak, son, you listed so many, but let me try...

BTW if you haven't seen ghost in the shell 2 innocence yet and this doesn't convince you to you may need a cybernetic brain implant.

As a lover of all things Gundam, I must add some of the best Gundam themes;

I am a huge UC gundam fan(the origin, thunderbolt, 0080, 08th ms team, 0083, zeta, chars counter attack, unicorn) , as for the alternate universes i never was interested in them even though a group i do like(two-mix) was used for the gundam wing opening

most of the vocal tracks i enjoyed were from 0083 with songs like :the winner)

But they don't make my top tier list like the instrumental pieces do,

My contributions for gundam are in this topic

https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/60/786425.page

Grimskul i think i prefer the original sakura tai sen to the remake sakura wars. the melody is similar but the original voice actresses are quite famous and very recognizable-

P.S.-the opening "ash like snow" is performed by one of my favorite japanese rock bands-the brillaint green...so good choice there.

Please keep in mind we want vocal tracks only, as good as some of the instrumental/orchestral stuff is lets leave that for another topic.

Wow, Venus Wars..... I have not even seen that referenced in..... a long time......

I have a huge soft spot for Knights of Sidonia Season 1....

And of course.....

Honestly, I am not much of an anime guy and I am sure these only highlight that.

Don't worry, we all started out somewhere. i even own an original copy of the robotech soundtrack on CD...so incredibly bad but part of my childhood.

Oh, I actually find myself singing or humming "To Be in Love" all the time.

I like it! Even if it is a bit cringe inducing!

However, I find my taste in anime leans heavily to the blocky Mecha Robot variety. I have seen plenty of others, but they just are not my thing I guess. <shrug>

I tend to gravitate towards the more serious shows. i want to be "wowed" be the animation and a great story. i long ago(in the 80s) recognized and grew tired of the formula kids shows targeting 5-10 year old japanese boys. which is why i never liked the dragon ball, one piece, ruroni kenshin, naruto type shows with the bad guy of the week/power up stories. there was just to much great anime i wanted to watch and follow that i didn't have time or interest in those types of shows.

I also tend towards the hard scifi, fantasy and obviously aviation themes. perhaps because my first anime experience was space battleship yamato. with it's linear timeline story arc and serious nature. this means most comedy shows are not in my favorites list, but there are a few that stand out like magic users club, dragon half and photon.

Even as picky as i am i still have 77 "favorite" shows (links below) over the past 30 years. i am just lucky that they also had the quality composers in the japanese industry giving them fantastic vocal and background music collections.
